I had an operation some four weeks ago. Before I did I was good. I cleaned my place as I knew I would not be able to do it for a few weeks afterwards.
Last Sunday I came back from a bath to find a flood in the kitchen with the washing machine looking sick. I felt the same way, switched off the machine, threw towels onto the floor and went to bed. Later I investigated and found that the kitchen sink was blocked. I put the blow electric fire on and went back to bed.
On Monday I phoned my landlords who said they would fix it before Christmas. I pumped out the water from the washing machine and put the unrinsed clothes to dry. I put the towels in buckets and in the bathroom. In the cupboard under the sink everything was wet. In the afternoon the general handyman came round with his big plunger and equal sized optimism. "This will shift it easilly" He boasted. Somehow he got the contents of the sink trap over the work surfaces, the floor, the walls and the stuff under the sink. He said "I can't understand it. We'll get a plumber." In the words of the typical British Police statement I "made no reply."
On Tuesday the plumber came late in the afternoon. I had been out seeing a psychologist in the morning. The plumber decided the outside pipe had iced up. He filled the sink trap and part of the sink with very concentrated sulphuric (sulfuric) acid and away he went. I went to bed.
On Wednesday there was an unpleasant smell from the kitchen which was a mixture of sulphuric acid and dirty plates from Sunday's fish supper. The plumber came again late and, bless him, he fixed matters. The whole downpipe was stuffed full of whatever down pipes become stuffed with. He replaced the whole drain trap and cleaned up the mess from the floor. Afterwards I looked at the mess. All the surfaces and the floor and everything else within splashing distance had been contaminated with the foul water. I went to bed.
On Thursday I started by disinfecting the sink, the walls and the worksurfaces. Then I sterilised the dirty, very dirty, dishes and washed them. There were three loads. Then I did the washing of the dirty clothes again and went to bed.
On Friday I cleaned out the cupboard and disinfected it and everything that was in it. I washed the towels and cleaned and disinfected the kitchen floor. Then I went for a bath and found that the plumber has used the bath and the bathroom sink to clean his stuff. He could not pour it down the kitchen sink as, you will remember it was blocked. I cleaned the bath and the sink and had a bath and and.... I had finished and went to bed.
I'm not sure why I wanted to post this but I feel better having done so.
Regards Rory

Wow! Such a heart-warming holiday story!
Seriously, you went through quite a saga there, and I hope you feel proud of yourself for setting things right so quickly.

Congratulations!
You handled a very difficult situation quickly, did not allow it to escalate or fester into a descent into worse messes; in short, Well Done!

Good Grief, rory!!!!
No wonder you posted on another thread that you haven't been feeling well.
Here, some of us had been making suggestions as to why you still are low on energy following your recent surgery,--and HERE'S the answer!!!
This kind of "problem" is enough to make anyone feel ill!
Hopefully, now that this is all over, you will begin feeling much, much better soon.
Best wishes,
Arid

I had a blocked up kitchen sink about a month ago. tried plunger(no good), baking soda and vinegar(no good) and Drano (ditto) ad an enzyme declogger (Zep,Zip,Zim,something like that?). Still no go, Then I went to step four, a professional plumber. Mr. Plumber arrived, decided he had to cut a hole in the wall in the room under the kitchen(a small bathroom). Cut the rectangular hole, broke through the wall and got the drain flowing. He said the main problem is my house is old (built 52 years ago) and things are starting to break down. While he was in the kitchen, he removed the S-shaped pipe under the sink, it broke and oozed all this brown, smelly, oily goo under the sink and onto my kitchen floor. Yuck. After he left, it took about an hour to remove the mess in the kitchen. And I hung a drawing DD (age 21) had done over the hole in the downstairs bathroom wall. The repair has stayed fixed. Mr. Plumber told me, to avoid future grease clogs, squirt some Dawn detergent down the drain about once a week and follow with running hot water for a minute or so. I've been following his instructions.

My goodness, Rory, that's just what you *don't* need after an operation! I hope you took things fairly easily and didn't overdo it. Even if it's been a month since the operation, you still should be taking care. But I'm also glad you have steadily worked away and conquered the disaster. Good for you!

Rory - BLESS YOU, boyo, for coming up with a story that had thrills, chills and a happy ending! It was exactly what I needed to pep me up this dreary after-Christmas morning! Makes juggling all my stuff far less tedious!

Thank you for hearing my saga everyone. The sink is still unblocked. It did feel like the last straw as I had got my place reasonable tidy before my operation and had kept it tidy afterwards until the sink...
Thank you particualarly for the mouse with which I identify.

I can't tell you how pleased I was every time I read, "I went to bed". Perfect on so many levels. Awful that you had to go through this when you needed peace and quiet and rest. So good that you anticipated needing a clean space to recuperate in. Thanks for posting your tale.
