I had to have a computer repair person in today. Pretty short notice, he called at 8:30 and made an appt. for between 11-1. Then called again at about 9:45 and said he was on his way. Luckily because I have been working pretty dilligent since the holdiay challenge, things were to a more "normal" level of squalor. I offered him the kitchen table to work on, which was clear but not wiped. The floor was filthy, but since he saw us put the dogs out when he arrived, hopefully he kind of understood it. The dishes were mostly done because I have been able to keep up with them so far. Bottom line, I did not die from embarrasment and my computer is once again up and running.

Good for you. I bet its a relief to have it fixed.
I had to have the phone company out once when my land line wasn't working. I assumed that the problem was on their end or outside the house.
When the guy came out he asked to see the wiring in the basement. That's not too bad. I took him down there and he could tell that I was wired for 3 jacks. I told him there were only two, but he said it was the 3rd one that was causing the problem. Well, that unused jack was in the bedroom, which is my worst room, and I had to take him through the apartment and let him in there. I was mortified.
He fixed the problem and explained it to me. Fortunately the jack was right there and not hidden behind piles of clutter. He didn't react at all to the mess. I bet he sees it all the time.
At least with the most repairpeople, you probably won't see them again.

It's great when your work pays off and a short-notice visit is easier to cope with. Good for you, messyjedi. Salmon, I agree repairmen have probably seen it all. They spend all day visiting homes where people have little time to prepare for them, plus they often need access to parts of the house visitors don't usually go. They are good at not reacting!

I had the repairs to my computer on Christmas eve of all days done on-line...they used some program they provided that took over my computer from their computer linking the two then they spent three hours online with my pc and got me fixed up in jiffy....it cost me $149.95 + $29.99for software I bought from them called Cyberdefender.....today I will probably call them back and add $70 to the fees I already paid and have one full year of tech support like that as a contract...it is so much cheaper than the geek squad...or taking the computer into the repair center and being without use of it for week or more.....and that costs arm and leg too....for $249.99 I will have one year of tech support to fix anything that happens to my PC online......like they did on Christmas eve of all days....

jedi, that's really good. I'm trying to get the goat path between front door and water heater cleared so I can call someone to fix my water heater. I really miss hot water, surprise, surprise. It'll still be awful in the areas he won't need to see but with hot water and the lesson learned from this extra kick in the butt I am determined to get to at least level 1 by Fall and maintenance not long after that. I do think that repairmen have seen some pretty bad situations but I'm still not able to let anyone see mine.

Whoo-hoo, Jedi! You rock! It is such a relief when you don't have to live in dread that something will break and you won't be able to let a repair person in to fix it. Congrats

Thank you everyone. Now to continue to make progress before I need to let someone into the downstairs (water heater, furnace, well, plumbing) since that is definitely the black hole.
