Just curious what these mean? I gather that exalt and smite are the way to praise someone... does this give more/less karma?
Not that I want to be giving 'karma' to anyone - but I think it is an interesting choice of words and am wondering how it pertains to message boards! Just curious!

Exalting gives more karma, smiting takes karma away. (Feel free to either exalt or smite me to test this.) (I can handle it.) Seriously, it's just supposed to be for fun. If it gets abused, it can be disabled. See more here.

I thought it was funny that the admin answering the questions had -69,000 karma! Not that I'd smite anyone here, though. Especially admins! I consider the karma "online hugs", so every hour I'm here, I'm "exalting" someone who doesn't have any karma yet. I don't want anyone feeling left out.

Interesting thing happened. I hope someone can help me.
I clicked on Exalt to give someone Karma. That worked, but then the words Karma and Smite disappeared from everyone's blocks. I can't give Karma to anyone else!?

It's once an hour. Probably to keep people from smiting or exalting so much that they are stuffing the ballot box and turning a fun thing into a source of flames and bad feelings and feeling left out or picked on, etc.
Very nice of you to spread good karma around, btw. Everybody here deserves good karma!

OK, this might sound silly, but I noticed I had 5 karma earlier....now I have 4. I'm wondering....did I offend someone so much that they took away my karma? Did someone accidently push the "Smite" button? (I'm hoping that was the case.) But it did make me a bit sad that one of my karma disappeared.

Rennie, the karma thing is meant to be for fun. If it is going to bother you if someone smites you and lowers your karma, please don't check the number.

Did someone shut down the Karma... I don't see it on anyone's posts anymore. CD

Cando, yes, the admins for this board shut down karma. It's meant to be for fun, and if hurt feelings are going to ensue, then that's not fun for anyone.
Unfortunately, with this version of karma, we can't have it go one way (the "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" way). It's either on or off, and those are the only two options. So, it's off.
We smote karma.

ROTFLMAO! Thanks for the great laugh, AH - I really needed it! For the record, I thought it was kind of silly - even high-schoolish. So I'm glad y'all turned it off!

You know, it occurred to me later that that last comment I made was rather tacky! Couldn't ya have any more tact than that, Rose??!!! Sheesh! I just want to thank all of you admins for all you're doing to get us up and going here. I'm so happy we have a new home! In the grand scheme of things, this option was a minor detail actually. My mom always says, "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time." Too true! Thanks for puttin' up with us - it really means more than you know...to a whole lot of people. Love, Rose

But that last sentence made me laugh!

I think y'all are wise, AH. I thought it was fun, but didn't like it when I noticed someone who was new on the site & had not posted on the old website in a very long time had been "smote"... So, I gave that poster an "exalt" twice and then noticed shortly after that someone must have"smited(?)" her again as her karma was back on zero again. So, that had left me with a kinda bad taste. ... And, if Rennie, was hurt even for a minute...I'm sure others may have felt that way too but not voiced it... So, glad y'all decided to let that go. No one is at fault here. We all have had hurt feelings at some point in our lives and know from experience how fragile we can be at our lowest points. It just seemed really wise to avoid contributing in a negative way to anyone's already fragile self-esteem issues. We are here to help each other and it seemed the karma thing held too much potential for negativity.
