I am always holding onto broken electronics and large items, etc. Cause I don't know how to throw them away. Is it ok to throw an electrical appliance into a dumpster (if nobody finds out? ) Is it ok to leave large items out next to a dumpster? How long does it take for them to go away? I know you can do a large item pickup for things, but I'm just sort of curious . Another question I have: If salvation army comes to do a pickup, will they come into a gated complex and go up stairs to your unit? I used to always donate to them, have them come to my regular house, but I'm not sure if we can do it here. We have the gate callbox sent to my roommates cellphone, but she is a teacher, and cannot always answer the phone, so I am not sure how they would get in, or if they would be patient to wait for somebody else to drive out. I could probably schedule it for a day when I am home... I guess i am rambling. This is why I have a hard time getting rid of things. Not cause i am attached to them, but in many cases, I just don't know HOW to get them out of here! Any advice would be helpful .

It's been my experience that anything you put NEXT to a dumpster will find it's way to a new home pretty quickly...then it's someone else's problem . Especially if it's furniture or electronics. Things like computer monitors and related equipment shouldn't be, but your local refuse pickup's website (or city site) might have instructions for how to go about recycling those types of things.

Church groups or missions might pick up the items. I think if you are home to let them in they will pick up most anything heavy - of course you need to tell them about stairs and such.

I agree that you can usually recycle electronics or large appliances. I would call your city and ask about it. Around here, you set up a special pickup for that kind of thing. Or you can drive it to the dump but they charge a fee.
Purple Heart also does in-home pickups for their charity.

Our city will take electronic waste with no charge. I just drove some to the dump yesterday. All I had to do was unload them from the car and put them in available large containers. It was very easy. Call your local dump or refuse or recycling center and ask.

I live in an apartment, had to get rid of an old broken TV, I placed it out by the dumpster (cause it was so heavy I couldn't actually put it in) - it was gone next time I checked. Don't know if someone picked it up to try to fix, or if the garbage guys took it, either way, it was gone and fine. Does someone need to call to get in the gate or is there a gate code you can give them? If the stuff is in working order, you can leave it out by your door and schedule a pick up from most charity places, no one needs to be home. Depending on how much you have, you might want to schedule several pick ups. The folks that pick up from me get an idea of what you have before they come out. They have dollys and such to help with heavier items, so they'll take those. But let them know when you call what you've got, be it "12 bags of clothes" or "a large couch" or whatever. Also ask about electronics, they may not take, say, old computer monitors.

Oh, some of the guys at goodwill will take anything... They're there for Community Service, so they don't wanna be there. Believe me, I know... I actually got a whole buncha stuff that goodwill was gonna throw out, once... A set of fishing lures, a buncha books... I won't throw away books, even if they belong to goodwill. >.>; Got a few readable copies of Asimov while I was serving my sentence...

for our electronics - TV's, VCR's, printers, old cords, etc., i googled "free e-waste pick up" and found a e-recycle place that came up three flights of stairs and took a lot of stuff, including a monster-sized big-screen TV circa 1987 that just broke. i hate to fill the landfill with stuff if i can somehow recycle it.
we have left large items next to the dumpster, but i always feel so badly about that. sigh...

I am a huge believer in recycling, especially proper disposal of toxic things, like electronics.
But if you are unable to do it "the right way" for now, there is amnesty. There are already tons of toxic stuff from the past decades in the landfills. Your contribution is just a tiny amount, compared to that.
In our perfect lives, we would recycle all of our electronics. But, we are not living in our perfect lives yet.
As far as whether it is legal to through electronics into a dumpster, I think that depends on your local government.
