I've been fooling around for about 2 years trying to get this place cleaned up. It hasn't gotten worse, but not much better either. In this time, only my father has been in here a couple times with the caveat "No wise cracks about my house".
Long story, but a friend now has an exceptionally cool mid-century table in her van that we bought at an antique mall on Friday. She's one of those happy, enthusiastic persons and when I told her about it she was like "Let's Go". I made every excuse but after a couple hours she talked me into it. I think she was more excited than me! She assured me multiple times that the table could remain in the van until I'm ready for it, even if it's two or three weeks, then she'll bring table over and she can meet my cat.
So we all know the drill. I have to not only clean and get rid of stuff, but move the furniture to make room for this table. Yesterday I put a call in to a fella to come clean, then emptied three storage boxes that were out in the open. Today I will begin stage one of the furniture move and continue to get things ready for the charity store.
I'm not sure if I'm mad at her for talking me into this, or if I'm happy at some level that somebody shoved me into panic mode and something would get done finally. So off I go to get showered and begin something towards the goal. Thank Goodness for weekends!
Anne.

Sometimes you need that shove. I've had a few of those over the last few weeks. None that have panned out though. But all of them got me doing something. Now I've finally broken through and I'm trying to clean and declutter consistently.
Maybe this will be what you need to get it going and maintain. If your friend starts coming over regularly, maybe you'll be motivated to keep things in order.

Good for you for getting going, even if it was somebody else who spurred you on. I just wish I had needed a nudge or tiny push rather than a SHOVE though.
It is better than it used to be. I mostly have control of the kitchen sink and counters and the laundry. I brought in a very mischevious stray cat and that has helped some areas. If I don't keep it straight, she'll get into it. The place is so, so tiny and there is barely any storage is the main problem.
Making a small dent today. Very small so far, I will do more damage shortly.

A friendly shove is always a good way to get started, I often buy me something I am wanting to have to inspire me to continue to clean, it helps sometimes. Good Luck!

Good for you lookingup! Sounds like this might be your chance to get a grip on things! Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect, just "good enough". I know you'll adore your new table! Keep us posted on how you're progressing.

Keep us posted on how you're progressing. CarrieI agree with this because it's also key. If you're like me, then you've got this "thing" where you want stuff perfect. That will drive you mad. Things should get manageable or good enough. I put that in perspective when I think about the homes of my friends. They're manageable, but I don't know anyone no matter how amazing their place is that has a perfect home. Keep us posted on your progress.

Perfectionism is the name of the game! How funny that we are all such peas in a pod! I have an extensive list of things to accomplish such as new coffee cups and window shades and painting the front door, none of which really needs to be done.
Today, out has gone two big bags of catalogs, raggedy clothes, and junk. Two big boxes for the charity shop, box of stuff not mine, box for the landlady. Bit by bit...
Then I must also entertain perfectly. I haven't actually entertained in the 8 years I've been here. The place is so tiny we always go elsewhere. This lady is somewhat avant-garde so the new table, good coffee, a tasty snack, and a look at the cat will probably please her totally. But still...
Trying hard to keep things in perspective~
