It looks like the local cable company has decided to change the cable line up again - I have far fewer channels - I was watching Project Runway - that is gone - so is A and E - no more hoarders - and they took away Style also. Hey I can find a synopsis online of PR. I am getting alot more done now. And when I move I won't be getting these channels anyway. So time to get used to it. I remember growing up with 3 or 4 channels and I got things done in my life.

while i agree that TV sucks time away, that mid-season deletion would piss me off. you can almost get anything online now. here you can at least get the jist of things. www.mylifetime.com/shows/project-runwayedited to say: hey, it says you can watch full episodes on their site, so you may not have to miss the end after all.

I can definitely see how I'd get more done at times if not for the tv distraction. I do enjoy now how I can keep up with my shows like Lost, Hoarders, and so on by going online to watch at my convenience though. I really like that.

Slow speed dial up - won't do it - oh well - such is life. I do know many people overseas download and watch some shows online though - most schools provide great high speed connections for their teachers. Hey I still get the major networks - those have enough shows. I just wish the cable company would inform us before hand - rather than just zap them without any notice at all. I wouldn't start watching it if I had known. Their hoping people will pay extra to add on tiers. Not me. I know many people have completely given up cable due to the economy.

As of this August, I gave up tv ten years ago.
The only reason we have satellite is because the kids want it. I think of it as a time and money waster, especially as they keep raising the cost of even the most basic programming.
Soon we're going to have to switch, or cancel it, and I dread the fuss that is going to cause.

Mimi - maybe you can switch over slowly by finding other activities for the kids - then turning off the tv for a day - then 2 and wean them off.
A couple of times when my dd was at home - I pretended the cable wasn't working (sort of loosened it so it wouldn't connect) - because I was having such battles with her about staying up late or wanting to watch in the morning before school and then we were constantly scurrying to get out the door on time for school.
The computer is a source of avoidance for me too.
Yes the costs of many things keep getting higher and there is a stopping point for people in this economy.
I am amazed when I go past the local movie theater - built about 5 years ago - I have never been inside - the parking lot is usualy full - at 7 dollars or more - how people can afford that is beyond me.
My basic cable is included in rent - I think the few channels would cost about 25 a month I think? mostly shopping networks just for that.
But then I don't understand how people can afford the fancy cell phones with all the features either.
I know people who have them but really I don't know how they afford it on their income.
But I digress.
Modern technology is wonderful - but the costs are just getting very high.

I have directv only because of the fact that it was the best picture I have ever had on my set AND I work nights and wanted to use the DVR feature of directv.....if it were up to me to give up my programs....nightly 10pm news which I am watching right now, Leno tonight show, and all three CSI shows I would give up the connection to directv just because of savings....but I really want these things...although I have not watched much of my 80 some odd eppisodes of each of the three CSI shows....news is now over and I will skip leno tonight because I have to get up early in morning but there are two other leno shows to watch too before tonights eppisode.....I get behind...I think I have maybe three of the 2 1/2 men eppisodes to watch as well.....If I give up directv I will never see all these unless I load them one by one onto video tapes...I can but won't do that for the fact time used is huge and tapes are expensive too.....
as for success19 and losing those channels....as you said once overseas you will not have them either....but hopefully they will as you said give you good high speed internet so you can view what you wish online...almost everything is online from tv now....hugs btt good topic....

Recently my husband has asked me to call the cable company and cancel all of our movie chanels. We had ordered them for my d.h. but he's working many hours so it's really not worth it.

We have far more channels than we watch. I'd say I probably only watch about 5 channels on a regular basis, maybe a bit more. I was very unhappy when I couldn't get FitTV anymore. It is a great channel for me, but we're already paying too much for cable as it is.

I've had no television for the past 5 years and 9 days.
I chose to give it up, so that I could focus on my recovery from my various "issues" (debting, overeating, squalor, etc).
I spend some of my spare time at 12-Step meetings and have made good progress there. I have been abstinent from debting for 3 years, and I am beginning to eat more healthfully.
However, I spend the majority of my spare time here at SOS.
And you know, I still live in squalor.
We can spend time unproductively ... in all sorts of ways. Even without television.
Being here at SOS is reshaping my brain and encouraging me to change. It does help. I'm making slow progress.
But ....

I have 1 and a half tapes filled of shows from the vcr - just basic stuff - like American idol and lost - I just haven't had time to watch tv this week anyway.
Once overseas I will have work full time and fun stuff to do - travel, explore, hang out with new friends.

seems to me that they should not be able to do that without some sort of notice to subscribers.
Success, it makes me sad to think that you cannot find fun stuff to do, right now.

i only watch a couple of channels too but i love the shows i do watch and i know in my mind i could live without them (with the exception of the remaining lost episodes gotta know!) but my shows are one of my few pleasures in life. luckily for me most of my shows are on abc and if i had to id get an antenna and drop cable. but we get that bundle thing with cable internet and phone which is not to bad - or at least not to bad right now.

TV Channels. I don't have cable; do not want cable. I don't have interest in all those channels. No satellite dish for me.
I have basic TV. Old Hitachi TV mid 90's that works great. I have a converter box since they changed the broadcast signal. That's all I want, that's all I need. I never watch any of the crime shows at all, CSI, and those. Never watch Lost (yep, never watch can't see the fascination with that show)!, or American Idol or Biggest Loser, . Sports? No, but occasionally watch baseball and I do like to watch golf tournaments. However: With the converter box, I am able to get "extra channels", more PBS stations (a nice surprise I found!), and I watch "Create TV" "Live Well TV" and " ION TV" now that I have the converter box! Never expected those extra channels when I installed that little box! No cable bills, or any hassle with that for me.
