well I have an area in my back yard that needs to be seeded and is very bare...I want to go get some great grass seed today and plant it tomorrow because it is supposed to rain on Sunday... I need to rake up the stuffing from the dog bed that Shep shredded out in the yard which is in the area where the mud is...so once I get that raked up I can use my seed spreader over that entire area and any others in my yard that need a little grass seeding....then some covering with a bale of hay I have been given from freecycle... when I break open the bale I will spread it over the area where it is just mud and fresh seed to keep away the birds....adding to keeping it in place and not running off with rain water too....the hay also will be placed into the two dog houses out in back yard for dog bedding since Shep shredded that all over the back yard mud area....see above anyway I am looking forward to being outside so I think I will crank up either the electric chain saw or the gas chain saw and cut up all my long heavy branches that I have piled on my deck to burn them in my fire pit....the electric chain saw I just need to adjust the chain tightness on...I think I have it too tight...might need oil too....but the gas chain saw is really tough to get started....mostly needs two extra hands on it to hold the trigger and hold it steady as I pull the starting pull.....I could use a string around the trigger but if the electric one is able to get used I think it would be a whole lot easier.... this is my only plan for the weekend...all my laundry is done with little exceptions....the dishes could get put in dishwasher too and I might take on that task some point making it non priority.,...hugs btt

this one is easy...little raking and seed is so easy to spread....I have a shooter type of seed spreader but I am thinking of hand tossing the seed to get heavier coverage in the mud area.....hugs btt

Hand-tossing sounds lke a great idea.
I'm glad you're not using bone meal--last year I used it under some new sod, and my dogs ripped up the sod to eat the yummy bone meal.

What a wonderful way to spend the weekend. I would love to plant grass! Isn't freecycle great? I can picture you and Shep hanging out and enjoying the wonderful green grass all summer.....

I went and bought seed after raking up the squalor of Shep in yard for the most part....I then did the stupid pulled open the seed bag breaking it in half and seed went at a very concentrated rate to one area....but I took my hands and spread it around....then I hand seeded all over the muddy area near the back entrance to the house...then I pulled apart my hay bale and spread hay over that area pretty heavy...shep loved grabbing the hay as I tossed it out...in fact he wanted to grab grass seeds too but they were too small...now my hand itches because I am allergic to hay.....well when I was a kid I baled hay and ended up in hospital with adrenaline being shot into me because I could not breath....anyway...washed hand and will go wash again with some GermX to see if I car get rid of my itchy left hand.....hugs btt
I did not fill the dog houses with hay yet....

oh my goodness sounded like a great plan until the hay allergy part. I hope the itching goes away soon and that you are able to enjoy your day in the great outdoors. Shep must be loving the whole novelty of it.. take care~

for the most part the itch has subsided...not entirely but mostly....I just changed my avitar again....back to the lawnmowerboy......that will be me when this new grass starts to grow grow grow....and grow some more....hopefully it will keep me from having a sadly dirty kitchen floor from wet dog foot prints in mud outside the back door.....hugs btt vroooom vroom on the lawnmower.....I need to save enough to buy a new one this year....I want the $400 model with key start and self propelled....but I can only afford to get one given to me by freecycle....

btt, I liked your glowing heart avatar, but my visual reference for you has remained the lawnmower cartoon--it made me smile to see it back again. Good luck with your yard work. We at Casa Charis are also trying to find some way to have both a yard we can be proud and a dog at the same time. So far: canis lupus familiaris 3, homo sapiens 0

my problems with dog in back yard is not just limited to keeping the mop handy in kitchen to mop muddy footprints off floors....it seems I need the services of YUCKOS....the pooo people who will pick up the poop.....I just run it over with the lawnmower....hardly ever really pick it up...but I do have a really great tool for picking it up....it has fingers on a round PVC pipe on a pole with a way to tie a plastic grocery bag onto the other end to hike the poo into the bag at the backside of the fingers....thru the PVC pipe...it was invented by a kid....and is copyrighted and patented as his invention...sold at Petsmart in past but I have not seen them lately....this little thing is great for bagging the pooo and then easy to toss into trashcans.....I broke one of the little hooks off the side that holds bag on so I drilled hole into it and put nut and bolt on it to hold the bag on the thing...works just as well....but I just do not work it that often....I should never hire someone to do a simple job I can do myself but I am L@ZY!!! and I cannot afford to hire anyone....ugg yucko's I need you on the cheapo's//////

Good luck with your grass seeding, BTT. About 25 years ago I had 2 puppies, and they completely destroyed my small yard. I planted seed about this time of the year, and watered it just about every day, and the grass grew back very well after a few months (even with the dogs still playing on it).
My dog can track in a lot of mud after a rain, I keep a towel by the door to wipe off his feet when he's muddy, but sometimes I forget, or I don't realize just how muddy he is until its too late! Lately I've taken to keeping a small area rug at the beginning of the carpeted area, just to absorb any extra mud before he makes it into the living room.
Picking up dog poo is no fun, but i do it since I live in an apt., and share the yard areas with neighbors. It's not so bad once you get in the habit, and remember to keep bags in your pockets all the time (dogs have a way of doing their business when, or where, you least expect it sometimes!) I have a small garbage can outside my back door, so the poo never enters the house.
Dogs can be a lot of trouble, and can definitely make a big mess sometimes, but they're worth it!

I cooked out side this morning on the BBQ...made some pork steaks....should have seen the dogs then...they were beside themself...playing and stuff....I sure hope the grass comes in thick....I need coverage of that mud area...it was not the dogs that made the mud...I planted grass seed before then I blew leaves with the leaf blower into that corner and it picked up and moved all the seed there...so it left it barren....now it is just pure mud...but covered with straw and seeded under it all....saw birds out there yesterday and wanted to shoosh them away from my grass seeds..... hugs btt
