This is such a cool thread and so many folks here collect such neat stuff! China, Alice In Wonderland books, dragons (excellent choice! ), gemstones, antique ink bottles, tea cups (a dainty relative of my favorite nemesis, the coffee cup ), owls, smiley faces, equine art, comic art, seraphim angels, spoons, weathered wooden items, and of course, fabulous Christmas decorations. If we put all of our collections together, we'd have an awesome museum! (We may be cluttered and crowded, but we are also creative! ) Slothzilla, you and I could probably have some great collection conversations. I collected comic books while growing up (I seriously considered matricide when my mom gave them away ) and I love horror and sci-fi movie posters and memorabilia, although my small collection disappeared while moving several years back. I love animation and it would be great if I had the space (and money) to buy and hang some classic cels from Chuck Jones or Tex Avery. Oh well, that Powerball number has to come thru sometime, right? In the meantime, since I've always lived in small spaces, I collect little things--fridge magnets and buttons. My grandmother started collecting fridge magnets when I was a child, my mother continued the tradition at our house, and I kept it going when I moved out on my own. At this point, I can't get all of them on one refrigerator. The buttons I collect aren't the buttons from clothing, but button pins with sayings, slogans, pictures, etc. Sarcastic comments, political candidates, businesses that haven't existed for 20 years--my button collection has it covered. My two current favorites are "Coffee isn't helping--get the jumper cables" and "I have enough money to last me a lifetime, providing I don't buy anything." They're all up on corkboard which lines my hallway and one of them always makes me smile each time I walk past, so I guess they're worth the dust they continuously collect.

Considering ornies can run from 40 to well over 100 each, I think you're doing great to get 2 or 3 for 75! Are you using Ebay or just finding great sales? I love the tree very much but, given my own problems with over shopping, I'm trying not to encourage anyone else's spending. ETA: I think I need to stay away from this thread for a while because I'm feeling a strong desire to start buying more ornies.

A lot of eBay, but also from smaller shops all over the internet. Like www.thechristmasbear.com . A tiny little gift shop in... Rhode Island? Somewhere up there. They're ornaments are pretty inexpensive too. They have a site, and I've bought two from them. www.ornaments2remember.com has BEAUTIFUL stuff, but they're more expensive. I've only bought one from them so far (I think), but I have my eye on 3 more. The most I've spent is $85, but that was for the 4-ornaments Little Pigs set. The most I've spent on a single one is $76, and I RUINED THAT ONE THIS YEAR (I was trying to superglue the crowns on to the ornaments so none would pull out, and the superglue dripped down one side of it, taking all the color with it. I'm still searching for a replacement. They're pretty hard to find.) The purchase of a new tree is going to take a lot of soul-searching. Considering how badly I've wanted a new one for so long (at least 2 years), it's not an impulse buy -- unlike the ornaments themselves, which are easier to justify in my somewhat tilted brain since they cost so much less. I don't blame you one bit.

Hi Disorganized Dragon! wow, sounds like you and I would get along just fine! I don't have any cels by Chuck Jones or Tex Avery, but one of my best friends does. He's got two(!) cells from the Grinch and a cell from the classic Tex A. cartoon 'Cellbound'. They are really cool to see up close! I collect refrigerator magnets too - I was working on covering my whole fridge, but I have an old fridge that 'sweats' at the top of the door, and the condensation was dripping down and messing up some of the magnets, so now I just have the freezer door covered. A couple of weeks ago I met a local guy who prints his own magnets, and they're really nice quality and huge! They're exactly the sort of images I'm into - old monster mag covers, movie posters, weird comic covers, etc. I bought a bunch, and covered a large tin can that I have with them - I keep hamburger buns and stuff like that in it. The tin looks much cooler now! I also collect buttons (yes, I collect all sorts of stuff!) I keep my favorites in a display case that's about 14" by 11". I've got political buttons going back to the 1930s, two Superman buttons from the 1940s, some Marvel comics buttons from the 1960s, etc. Fun stuff!

Ooh, Slothzilla, your friend has cels from Grinch and Cellbound? That's really cool. I would love to have art like that on my walls. A friend of mine who is completely into Disney animation has tons of cels--so many, in fact, that he doesn't even have all of them framed and up on display. If I wasn't such an honest person, I might consider 'borrowing' a few of them ; he probably wouldn't even miss them. It's too bad your fridge door sweats so that you're unable to have all your magnets up, but I understand taking the precautions. You don't want your favorites to get ruined. Several of my older magnets have become somewhat bleached by the sun coming in thru the kitchen windows, so that's disappointing, but I like them too much to take them down. Besides, if the sun damage has already been done. . . (And yes, I leave my kitchen shades open, not because my kitchen is actually clean, but because I live on the second floor. So unless Spiderman is in the neighborhood, no one is going to see the science experiment in my sink.)

I love reading about everyone's collections - things being cared about and treated properly is the antithesis of squalor, and it's really inspiring to me. At the moment, the only thing I could really be said to collect is books. I love the NYRB classics series, and I buy them whenever I find them on remainder. I've discovered a lot of great authors this way, and the books themselves are just so pretty lined up in my bedroom. I definitely have a tendency towards hoarding, so I have to be very careful with collections.

MisC, don't you make me break out my Nerf gun . . . (Of course, you have two little boys who could probably out-Nerf-gun me any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Little boys are usually Nerf experts, even if they've never owned a Nerf product. I think it's in their DNA. )

I was introduced to collecting at a very young age. My first collections were rocks and jewelry (rocks set in metal, I guess, ). I still collect jewelry, especially estate jewelry. I have a lot of jewelry (I wear it all too)! I also collect crystal, although I haven't acquired anything new because I have no more room for it to keep it safe from kitties. I still collect rocks too - I love rough gemstones and interesting specimens of unusual minerals. Over the years, I have taken up collecting dishware, cutlery and decorative cat figurines. I don't really have those collections anymore, since I had to get rid of stuff to move years ago and most of the cat figurines were broken.

My grandmother collected pigs -- her 2,000+ collection was sold with her home when she passed still pristine in the custom cabinet (I didn't get my housecleaning DNA from her). My mother collected angels -- her collection was reduced to a few unbroken pieces tucked away for safe keeping and piles of angels with broken wings and halos by the time she passed(guess where my hoarding was learned). I didn't collect as a kid--didn't trust life enough to believe that things weren't transient. As an adult, I have tried to collect different things with each marriage and ended up with a collection of divorce papers (never could figure out how to get collection of alimony checks).
After the disaster that was last divorce, things felt so disconnected that I found myself picking up someone else's collection. A new friend had collected Pez dispensers for many years -- she was looking for the 4 cereal boxes with miniature Pez characters on them. This was 11 years ago. I bought her a set at Target, and bought myself a set while I was at it (the kids were going to eat the cereal anyway so why not). Now I have a storage unit full of totes full of Pez dispensers from all over the country -- it is so easy to get started on the addiction at only $1.25 a piece. Every room of the house has a pile of Pezzies somewhere stacked until I get a chance to get them boxed up. I "am going to" build display cases to go over the display boxes I haggled from a store so I don't have to dust -- been working on that project for 5 years. I would sell them all tomorrow if I found a buyer -- I've been told that eBay started because a guy was tired of going with his girlfriend to Pez conventions -- that's so much easier to say when the economy sucks.
Worst collection habit I've got -- long strings of words put together that don't make any sense and constantly fall out of my mouth.
