I am in recovery from one addiction only to take on another - shopping, mostly on-line. I have run out of space. I am so disgusted that I don't even bother to put things away and my apartment has become a total mess!! Where can I go for help in cleaning and getting things back to "normal?"

Since you tend towards addiction, could you try to addict yourself to selling stuff on ebay? I've been trying to nudge my addictions towards "cleaning" but it only seems to hold a little bit & place at a time. This is a good, safe, motivational, informative place. -escape

Welcome, GMA7 !
The place to go is within yourself.
Only you can choose to change your behavior, stop buying, start getting rid of stuff.
Easy to say, very hard to do for people like us.
To get back to "normal," you will have to start small. Break the job of getting rid of all the excess stuff into small jobs. Celebrate the victory of every job you complete. Don't beat yourself up about what hasn't been done yet, you are getting to it.
You can do this. Read and post here for support.
It's good to have you here.

Go through your things , new stuff too. If it doesn't have a home it would be best to put it in a box to give away or to sell at a garage sale. When you see items that haven't been used go for free or cheap, it will help you the next time you go to stock up . You have to start working with this ! Best of luck!

Hi gma7, the best place to begin is to reduce the number of excess things you're buying--see the other thread here titled "Shopping Woes". Keep a running shopping list for essentials and only go into a store when you really need to. Make a game out of seeing how few "nonessential" items you can get out of the store with. Come back here and report when you've been shopping, so you can actually record in black and white what you are buying--sometimes seeing it in print makes you see that you didn't need it.
Are there things that you still have receipts for that you can return? That's a good way to get a few things out of the house and get some money back.
Once you stop bringing stuff in, it'll be much easier to organize what you do have. Keep posting, and report your progress.
