Last night, I spent my monthly Kindle book allowance for non-free books on the next volumes in two mystery series I'm reading. Today I bought a little wooden sewing caddy that holds thread, a pin cushion, and a thimble. I'm going to glue a magnet on the back to keep track of my tiny embroidery scissors. Total for books and caddy, less than $20US. I'll thoroughly enjoy the books and use the sewing caddy to take to quilt guild meetings, so I'm considering this money well spent.

I did some recreational acquiring on Tuesday when I was in the Big City for demos. Last December I was in this same area and happened upon a bead store and fell in love with a fired clay pendant with a little banner on it with the word "peace". There were a couple other pendants but I passed on them at the time. But I thought about them and thought about them, even called the store to see if they shipped (they don't) so thought I would just see what was left the next time I was down in that area. So I go into the store between demos and there they are, still there, an soft orange pendant with the word "hope" and a marbly tan pendant with the word "faith". I bought those and some czech glass beads to go with. The whole purchase was more than I "should" have spent but I LOVE these pendants and the matching beads. I'm going to make three separate simple strand necklaces that I can wear like a little charm or worry stone sort of thing. Just a reminder for the day of something good to hang on to. I want to be accountable for my acquisitions here because I want to stay CONSCIOUS about acquiring. I don't necessarily have the goal of not acquiring, but I want to be thoughtful and truthful and motivated by the right motives to buy what I do. I think this purchase will give me a lot of enjoyment for a long time ahead.

I also bought more yarn bundles to make necklaces to sell.

Today I had a $5 off coupon with any purchase of $25 or more. So I went into the store it came from and picked up things I know I need and will use. I bought 2 cans dog food, a bottle of my favorite laundry detergent, bed pads for hubby and some snack food for me. Added up to just about $30, so I was able to use the coupon and get things I'll definitely use. I haven't been taking anything I find in the street (neighbors' discards) so I've been good, honest!

I exceeded my non-free Kindle book allowance today by $8. Five Agatha Christie mysteries were on Daily Deals for $1.99 each, and I bought four of them--two Miss Marples and two Hercule Poirots. Since the usual Kindle price of Christie books ranges from $5.99 to $8 each, I think I did well in snapping up a bargain on one of my favorite authors. All four will be read and enjoyed.

Because you posted it after March 30th. Posts don't automatically file themselves, they post where you post them.
If you want, start the new thread for the week. Copy and paste the starting message to a new thread.

I'm going to post in this thread for a while yet. Maybe creativechaos, you could just change the name to the acquisition accountability thread. I can't since I didn't originate the thread. Anyway, I had posted a couple of weeks ago about clothing that I was considering. I ended up only buying the turquoise cardigan and a scarf. I have been wearing them constantly and am pleased with them. I have successfully resisted all sorts of craft supplies over the last couple of weeks. It really takes stepping out of the fantasy that I can use the thing, and stepping into the reality of actually making things. It really helps me not acquire. I need to go through my spring and summer clothes and get them put out. I am tempted by all sorts of things but I very likely have plenty of outfits to wear for the summer. Got 2 nice books through Paperback Swap that I feel confident that I will enjoy. Slow going on reading right now. I need to spend more time on reading instead of just watching tv programs on the computer.

I bought socks. Yep, socks. I have a thing for cute socks. I need to stop though. My sock drawer is going to explode.
I also paid small reading fees to have some of my work considered by two different literary journals. Sent two poems to one and a 100 word story to another. The reading fees were cheaper than an expensive coffee. I found I got an even bigger rush sending out my work than I do shopping online. Maybe I should take that as a sign to focus even more on my writing and revising and send more work out.

angela you did super well!
iris that is SO COOL that it was more fun to send out work (which I would think is scary) than buy things.
I have been doing very well not buying things. even typewriters!!! was so tempted. I did buy a ton of junk food. I think my buying silly things got a bit displaced rather than stopped. I'm putting a stop to that, as much as possible, starting now.

Last Friday I bought several skeins of yarn (about $13) which I'm using now on a baby afghan to donate, through my sister's friend, to a homeless shelter in Virginia. Fiber stuff isn't the cheapest hobby, but it's enough to keep boredom at bay, be creative, and do a little good for someone else, too.

hi people! thanks for keeping this thread alive. i love reading your thought processes on acquiring, and what you buy, and what you choose not to acquire. i think Angela's idea is good of making this thread a continuous one and people can come and go as they like. i edited the intro to make it ongoing - that way, people can bookmark it if they want. congrats to you, irisbloom on submitting your literary work! i got a big smile when i read what you said about it being even more thrilling than shopping! i worked on some art recently and it was the same - more thrilling than shopping or acquiring. also, congrats to all peeps who had weight loss successes and who updated some of their wardrobes - congrats! angela, i think those pendants are really pretty and meaningful. congratulations on making very conscious buying and acquiring choices. agree with you that i should have bought the shoebox storage bins and NOT the marbles. i have been obsessing over those durned containers ever since! they would help with my myriad craft things. i bought stuff - most of it unnecessary. i think in the past two weeks i spent about $100 on deli food (separate from groceries) and thrift store stuff. not exactly great, but not so bad for me. wanted or needed and acquired: a specialty cord for my boom box - bought at the thrift store. a wok. it's a MESS - i have to clean burned on stuff off of it and re-season it, but it's steel and lightweight, and a good size but not too large. not needed but acquired anyway: 10 cd's, 2 beaded dragon patches to applique onto something (?) - a lovely flower enamel vintage pin for $3 that i will likely wear (i love wearing pins), some large pieces of very nice brocade fabric - probably synthetic, but very beautiful got all that fabric for 5 bucks. i did something i •never* usually do. the grocery store discontinued some natural rosemary-peppermint dish soap and i bought one bottle a few weeks ago (even though i still am only halfway through the present stuff i use for general cleaning and dishes) and discovered that i LOVE this soap for dishes; it leaves everything, including my hands, feeling so fresh; it's the peppermint, which i find healing. so tonight, i bought another bottle - it was the very last one in the store. i don't usually "stock up" on dish soap. but i am glad i bought it - now i won't run out of this soap anytime soon. but i own that this is definitely hoarder thinking and behavior. i took the art home last wednesday. i tried to tell the woman i was a hoarder and the problem, but she encouraged me to take it and i did. as soon as i got it home, i realized it gets lost in here. my decor is bright and cheerful; much of it is Ethnic art and craft, mostly from Mexico. the art piece is lovely, but it is too quiet and colors too subdued for this loud place. now i am in a conundrum but the longer i wait, the harder it is going to be to tell her and get it returned to her. argh. now this is even more complicated! i am thinking about taking a class on quilting offered by the guild on another island, but it is 45 bucks and this is tax month so i probably won't take the class.

Oh, I so needed to read this thread! I was feeling down and I just ordered a book I really want to have, a mystery, second hand, at the less than a half price. I know I am going to enjoy having it. Yesterday I got for free Henry Thoreau's Walden, which is actually mentioned in the one I ordered and it reminded me. I have been quite good at acquiring only things I will really use lately, but I am buing too much comfort food again (chocolatte, biscuits...), so I take this book as a good solution. bluefrog, how many books do you usualy aquire in a month? I have a lot of Kindle books I have not read yet and I have to restrain myself from getting more. (I had to delete some from my Kindle last night, as there was about 850 and my Kindle tends to slow down, when there is over 800. I am at 783 now and that is better.)
