Better sleeping habits is something I really need and want to work on. I've been struggling with insomnia for about three years now and most days I'm exhausted and don't feel capable of doing much intensive thought, which is bad considering I handle the books for my family business. Last night I went to bed at midnight and woke up around 5AM. I need to be up by 6AM to get my daughter off to school, so I made myself lay in bed until it was 5:30AM and I couldn't stand it anymore. This was an excellent nights sleep for me, unfortunately. Usually I fall asleep watching TV around 9PM, wake up around midnight and then can't get back to sleep, so watch TV/doze all night. Clearly, I need to get rid of the TV. I recorded a show a couple days ago, "Sleepless in America". I've only watched the first few minutes, but I'm hoping that, in addition to discussing all the terrible health effects lack of sleep has on the body, they'll have some ideas on how to get better sleep.

Perfectionist, have you had blood work done to check to make sure you're not vitamin deficient in anything. Some vitamin deficiencies can cause really serious insomnia. I'm speaking from experience.
Iron , D , B etc also have your hormone levels checked - just a suggestion.

nice to meet you perfectionist. I remember wher 5 hrs was an excellent nights sleep for me too. Now - 7 hrs is superdooper. That was/ is my pattern too if I fall asleep too early, I'm awake from midnight and by morning I am not a happy camper. At the moment I'd like 11pm bedtimes, but am still hassling over midnight lights out. If I can get it to 11 and then sleep through - then I'll try edge lights out earlier so I don't notice and do the wake up and stay awake most of the night thing. last night bed 11.ish. 11.45 lights out. woke ? eyes open before 6. Up at 6.45.

Total abject failure here. I got up at 11:00 yesterday, and last night I was reading in bed, and just not sleepy. I finished my book, and tossed around for a while before finally falling asleep, I don't know when.
DH took DD to school, and I went back to sleep and woke up at 1:00 pm. Argh.

10:30 lights out, 7:00 wake up. 7:30 get-up.
Doing pretty good with being consistent on my end. Interesting to see though that my sleep quality and energy are NOT consistent.
If it isn't the bedtime, what is it that is contributing to the inconsistency? It is probably a long list.
Hormones Temperature Hunger What were the activities of the day: how much social time and how late in the day? Did I work hard physically? Did I work outside? In one of the shops? Did I drive very much? Did I get any wind-down time?

angela- remember you used to be a more than 9 hours in bed each night person - before your life changed a whole lot. 20 odd years ago I was a 9 hours in bed, mostly asleep person too. I am trying to stretch the 8 hours rest to 9, and hope to get beyond the 5 hours sleep. last night - in bed about 11, woke to put light out about 11.30, awake by 5, rose about 6.30, then back to bed. til late. reading. avoiding a dreaded phone call.

wynken you are doing amazing getting into bed when you are. Well done. I do need more sleep than I've been getting and I think I'm still working off the deficit, along with all the stress of all the changes and challenges. Earlier bedtime is serving me well. If I am gritting my teeth and zoning out on the computer, what really am I doing to myself? Better that I just go lay down, no matter how early. So saying that, it's 9:30 here, silly things on the tv and not much gumption for anything else so I'll go lay down and listen to my prayer podcast. G'nite!

After waking up at 1:00 pm yesterday, I didn't try to go to bed really early. I think I got into bed at 2:00 am.
This morning I hit my snooze a couple times at 6:00, and then woke up at 7:05, and had to wake DD up for school. Does anyone else have an emergency alarm in their brain? Mine seems to wake me up just barely in time for something important.
So maybe I can get back on schedule, or at least closer.

angela - that post I wrote on lessons I'm teaching myself - It was a post of what I have recently done 'wrong' that disrupted my sleep. Last night bed at 11.45 read just a paragraph. light out at 11.55 guessing a better night - 6hrs sleep rose at 7.45 I really needed o be in bed earlier as I wanted to be somewhere at 9, and the hour delay for breakfast eats a big chunk of time.
