Why does it take so long to get into bed? Here is what happened tonight, and this is typical: 8:50 - notice I'm a little tired, and tomorrow I work. I ought to start getting ready for bed. 9:00 I start the "UnF Tomorrow Morning" routine from UnF Your Habitat. Pack lunch. Put phone and Kindle on chargers. Decide on clothes for tomorrow. Move wallet into work bag. Remove receipts from purse. 9:30 We went grocery shopping today, and one of the habits I am working on is recording transactions in my budget software the same day they happen. I gather up receipts and enter into YNAB. I also tracked my food and exercise in My Fitness Pal and planned tomorrow's. 10:00 play a little game of Spider Solitaire. 10:15 open up Facebook. Big mistake. I like FB to keep in touch but wish I had done this earlier. 10:45 Realize I should get to bed already. I need to brush my teeth and take all my pills. Notice DS is in the bathroom brushing his teeth and taking his pills. Read a little more Facebook. 11:00 DS still in bathroom. Appears to be removing contacts. They are new - he is new at this - so it takes a minute. 11:30 Hear DS shaving. Ask how much longer he is going to be. Almost done, he says. 11:40 he's done with the bathroom. I finish reading the post I'm on, get up and he's back in the bathroom. 11:55 my turn finally; take pills, brush teeth, wash face. Apply skin care products, put on pajamas. As one of the pills gives me heartburn if I lay down right away, I look at a little more Facebook. 12:35 and here I am. May as well stay up a few more minutes and post. What have we learned today? It takes longer than I think to get to bed. Start earlier. Take the pills, brush teeth and all that, right after dinner. Avoid waiting for the bathroom. Then pack lunch (assuming the kitchen isn't occupied, that happens too), do whatever else has to be done for next day. Then listen to music and read offline for a little while and go to bed.
I like to listen to audiobooks. Problem is I fall asleep and if I forget to set the sleep timer, I wake up and the book is done and I have to find my place and listen to it again. Or, I wake up at 3 and don't realize I slept through the last five chapters and I'm totally confused. If I set the sleep timer and I'm not asleep when it stops, I may restart it but because I'm sleepy forget to set the timer again. I'm currently listening to all the Patricia Cornwell Scarpetta series in order. They can be a bit gruesome for bedtime.
I think the trick is to get all ready and into bed before I get tired or sleepy. Once I am tired, it takes forever to get to bed. I have even sat on the sofa feeling too tired to get up and walk to the bedroom! Plus I don't make the best choices when I am tired; my executive function part of the brain has checked out already. Hmm - being all prepared for the next day, bathed and in pj's, then lounging in bed for a while with nice music, incense or scented oil warming, a good book - I might try that. It sounds nice. Well goodnight, I'm off to bed.

Computer of at 2237. lights out 2330. took a while to fall asleep. Woke up at 0900, but didn't get out of bed for an hour. So, improvement over the last couple of days. My next goal is to get out of bed promptly after waking. wynken - good luck on getting back on a better sleep schedule.

shabbychic, completely relate to the sitting on the couch too tired to go to bed! I am trying very hard to keep moving long enough to drop into the bed instead of the couch. Lately, the bath has been hijacking my efforts, I get in and relax and lay there until the water is luke-warm but I'm too tired to get out! And yes, that executive functioning shuts down too. I don't have the bathroom use conflicts you do, it sounds like you've got a good strategy for that piece of the puzzle. The only way I have started to win the battle is to go to bed EARLY. No getting sucked into anything on the computer, that is a black hole from which I don't return until it's far too late.

Last night - lights out about 11.30. woke about 7? rose a bit after then at least. shabbychic I'm like that too. I need to turn everything off 2 hours before bedtime. I just need to practice doing that, instead of just delaying about everything. angela - as your body cools, its making melatonin for greater sleepiness. Can you set a timer to get out earlier, so your cool down happens in bed? bobolink - I'm wanting to get the bed 11 - 7 thing happening. That's my aim. As above. I need get dishes washed earlier, screens off and head down the hall earlier.

wynken, fortunately, the book was only moderately good so I could put it down and sleep. I have been known to start a reading a mystery in the evening and look up to see that the sun is coming up.

Wynken, taking your advice, I am running my bath cooler and less water, then will get right into bed tonight for further cool down. The supplement tea helped last night, no sweating. It's 8:30 currently, lights should be out by 10.

Turned off computer early, but stayed up late reading and then had trouble falling asleep. Asleep by 2ish? I'm very tired this morning I'm annoyed because this is how I end up sleeping until noon.

Two things that might help me and that I will try tonight:
- put alarm at the other end of the room so I have to actually get up to turn it off - set alarms/reminders for turning off computer and lights out

bobolink I had great success with setting an alarm on my phone for going to bed. I've been indulging in watching an episode of Corner Gas on my phone while lying in bed. Grace kitty lays upside down next to me and we enjoy some cuddle time, it has become a sweet little routine. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be affecting my ability to fall asleep. Lights out last night at 10:30, woke this morning 6-ish with Grace messing with the birds in their cage (under a blanket). This has become a not so nice routine. I think I finally woke for good around 8.
