August 25, 2015 Jumping back in! The plumber is coming either Wednesday or Thursday. He has to walk through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. It's so easy for me to fall back into squalor in the kitchen. I need to get rid of more dishes, and just have one set for myself. Does one person need 12 mugs and 12 glasses? NO! cleaned off one half of kitchen table (lengthwise) threw away a lot of garbage moved dishes from right counter to table for now moved dirty dishes from right sink to right counter moved dirty dishes from left sink to right sink---I know for a fact that these dishes have been "soaking" for a minimum of 6 weeks cleaned off left counter, drying rack is ready to go moving my stars ahead to Wednesday

saffron - You can bite that elephant, just one chew at a time. You have made a great start. woot cleanbeeMost days I do a load of dishes. Late last night it took 12 min to wash, and there was some that had carried over from previous day. I need to think about what is in my cupboards. Get them working for me. Some stuff - gift glasses - etc just don't pay their way.

Two tips for efficient, pain-free dish-washing by hand... 1) Put like with like. Use your brain's auto-pilot by washing and rinsing all plates together. Auto-pilot takes over with repetitive motions. It's magic! Ditto for all glasses together, all flatware, etc. 2) Finish what you start. Do all the dishes in one fell swoop. Don't stop, don't take breaks. This has been a Public Service Announcement, brought to you by papermoon and 17 consecutive months of clean dishes and a shiny sink.

I was taught to wash dishes like that: all stoneware, all flatware, all pots and pans, etc.

saffron - I really want to cheer you on for keeping on attacking those dishes. You are doing great. Keeping on washing as least as many as you use in the day means you will catch up. However - the key is to keep on the daily action. In a busy household with many people in might be easier to do a session with each meal. If there are others above the age of 7 (my guess at a starting age) who like to eat and create washing up, getting them helping would be great for you and for them. Note I'm not saying that a 7 year old be in charge of all the washing up, but they might be able to dry up, and put away easy things. Littler people than that can enjoy helping too. Plastic and spoons for starters. I'm getting mine washed most days, with an extra few minutes to spend if I miss a day. And then its caught up. Lately - washing up while a meal cooks is working for me.
