Ooooh, padded envelopes! Who doesn't just *love* hanging onto those babies? I can see 8 of them right now, taking up space on my bookshelf. Bye!

Not to put a cramp on the tossing - but there was just a story on the CBS news the other night - about people tossing food that has expired. The report said that we are throwing away hundreds of dollars by tossing food with a "use by" or "best by" or "Expires by" date on the product. THat things can last much much longer than the date stamp.
Milk can last up to a week after the date - but check to make sure it has not spoiled. Canned goods can last years past the date - as long as the can is not rusted out or bulging. So I am rethinking the tossing of the canned goods. I am still watching the dates and using oldest first.
Some food it is easy - mold=toss.

Ohblondie, I regularly google whether or not I can eat something I've got in my fridge, rotfl! Just last weekend I checked to see if the kolbassa DH bought was ok to eat, because it said "best by" the day before. It was fully cooked, and apparently it was still ok for another week, so we had a nice meal of it. But the repercussions of eating spoiled food is something I'm afraid of, so that's why I'm always checking first. I toss things if they've been open for a while and they're past their due date. I brought a nice half-full bottle of honey dijon mustard to the party, too risky to eat. I found more padded envelopes for you, swampy. That pile of stuff in my bedroom that I was avoiding turned out to be a bunch of them, with more novels and 3 purses. ! Now I understand how that happened: my 'donate' bookshelf was full of crap, so I started a pile near my bed. I also have a phobia of tossing anything with my name & address on it, so I had to chop that packaging up first - tossed onto the pile of books, waiting for me to get to them. Then the purses hid what was down there, so it turned into a pile to overlook. It's gone now, yay!

cyn. Im that way with my name and address too. Thanks for the envelopes, they are coming in handy! ohblondie my food pantry actually has a list posted of how long certain thing are good for beyond the expiration date. I did toss this because it wasnt bottled, it was one of those plastic cups with a foil lid. And it was far enough past the date that there was no question. I try to go through my pantry a few times a year and pull out expired or near expiration items and either plan to use them up or donate them if i cant. Sometimes for me, i just buy too much stuff or my tastes change and i know i won't eat it. I do worry alot about food poisoning and i understand where those fears come from.

cyn@swampedbystuff I agree with you both! I am scared of food poisoning as well - and I am so careful about opened containers and half used containers and restaurant take out....And I check my bread very carefully for any mold. I was just happy that the can of baked bean that expired the summer of 2014 is still good and the soup that expired fall of 2014 is still good. I volunteered in the food pantry and I had forgotten how long they keep canned goods. I remember they froze meat and other perishable items and could keep those for many months as long as they were frozen.

I remember way back, a roommate of mine used to shop at a discount grocery store where everything was dirt cheap, and many times the products were well past their due dates. He'd get awesome deals on stuff, but I didn't like the looks of the food. He got a huge container of peanut butter one time, but all the oils were separated. I know that happens with some kinds, but not with the regular types - this stuff was *old* and way beyond what I'd feel comfortable eating.
Swampy, I might have even more envelopes for you, ha. The reason I was setting them aside was because my scissors didn't slice through the bubble wrap and it was a total pita to deal with it - so I just avoided them. But in my cleanup I found some amazing (really, really old) steel scissors that are so much better that the usual ones. They chopped those addresses off like you wouldn't believe!

Could my busted up computer parts munch sammies, wear holy sweaters and get candle wax melted on them in celebration?

I hope everyone is very hungry - I cleaned out the pantry, fridge, and freezer today. First off - 5 pounds of store bought ice, moldy blueberries and blackberries and expired milk- smoothies are looking good. Smelly ricotta cheese, many bags/containers of almost finished peanuts (all different so I couldn't throw them in the same can), two boxes of stale cereal, 1/2 a tin of opened Christmas cookies, stale crackers, pita chips and a huge bag of dried fruit that smelled funny My curbside recycling container is more than 1/2 full now. Also, a whole truck bed of cardboard - need something to burn for all the cooking we are going to do!!

Cool - I was worried where I was going to sit until your sofa joins the party!! Forgot to add I threw out a "bed ruffle" yesterday. "Bed ruffle" in quotes because in a creative fit I turned a perfectly decent (for someone else) dust ruffle into a piece of garbage. It matched our comforter but the bed is one of those incline beds so we couldn't use a conventional ruffle. My big plan (at one time) was to velcro it on the bed. All I did was have a big, frayed, wrinkled mess that I transported from state to state Now we aren't using that bed with that comforter anyway. I'm sure all you creative types will be able to get it all spiffed up for the party. Maybe it can go with Kimmy's blanket!!
