A wise and sparkle -y woman suggested that I purge and pack as though I am moving in a few weeks, even if I don't find an apartment in that timeframe. She is so right. I'm setting aside a little bit of time each day to do so. I consider it a break from regular housework and schoolwork, so it is almost relaxing.

sometimes I day dream about living in a one room home. Just for fun. WHat would I give up? I think it is a good test Every time we consider an apartment I daydream what it will be like once we settle in. There are definitely some recurring themes. The Crafting TARDIS stays in every incarnation. So does my writing desk, and certain of my kitchen items. In doing this I think I've actually decided I'm ready to part with my rubber ducky collection. The daydreams of my future bathrooms have not included them, or the ducky related art, or any of that theme at all. Rather than wait until I move, I think that packing the whole business up and giving them away in a lot will 'break the seal' on my downsizing dreams. After all, the more you purge, the easier it gets!

Ah yes. I, too, have let go of my rubber duckies. I kept the one most dear to me, and I'm perfectly happy with that. I think mentally trying on new apartments is a lot like shopping for clothes. Something looks SO wonderful on the hanger, but when you put it on... meh, not so much. Too tight, too itchy, too "not me". Next!

Every time we consider an apartment I daydream what it will be like once we settle in. Great idea! (I'll steal it.)Don't think too small if you don't have to. While it's possible to live on 700 sq ft, you have to think about your place a lot, and planning is more important and takes more time. Everyone has to be considerate of the others all the time, and that can be quite exhausting at times. In a larger apartment you can "hide" yourself and relax better. (Can you tell I live small?)

I'm setting aside a little bit of time each day to do so. I consider it a break from regular housework and schoolwork, so it is almost relaxing. Great plan! DH and I (very senior citizens) moved 5 years ago. I didn't have little ones to deal with during the day, but I used that time to declutter/donate/trash the first floor and basement. In the evening I would go upstairs to the bedroom that had a TV and relax by watching my favorite programs. During commercials I would retrieve items from dresser drawers, closet shelves, etc. Also during commercials, I would sort through those items and pack what I decided to keep. Just working every evening (during commercials), I decluttered and packed up 3 bedrooms and a bathroom that had a roomy linen closet and large vanity beneath the sink. Your idea of moving to an apt. closer to your husband's work is very logical and efficient for his sake and that of your family unit. Good luck with your choices! This is exciting!

700 ft! 2 bedrooms? I disagree with puppy. I think you need both table and sofa and even a coffee table. You need a place to eat as a family and the littles need to have a place to do homework/play/draw and no way can you get by without a sofa to make out on.

Have you looked at any other apartments this weekend? Are you any closer to a decision? Can you tell I'm excited for you to live somewhere that works better for you? Diane

One good clutter strategy: Ask yourself- if I were leaving home permanently, would I take this? Sometimes I pretend I'm leaving my husband. What would I take- some clothes, shoes that are comfortable and attractive, some reading and writing supplies, my pets of course. But no clutter, no junk, no food. My husband and I and our two daughters have lived in this 800 sq foot house for 30 plus years. The kids grew up and moved away, but one is moving back this week, with her boyfriend and their daughter. It will be okay. Two women to share the cooking and cleaning, it's going to be okay.

Jannie I ask myself if there was a fire would I try to save this? I plan as if we have to evacuate. I have even asked my kids if they could only save certain items what would they save. Boy could I have saved a lot of money in the first place not buying this stuff.

Sometimes I pretend I'm leaving my husband. This would be too delicious a fantasy right now. He's been pretty frustrating RE: looking at apartments. I'm not going to borrow trouble... I HAVE looked at a few more places, one that was awesome and tiny but better laid out, but turned out to be too expensive, and one that I'm filling the application out for right now even though it doesn't have a yard. It is near a large park and the downtown area. It's laid out in a straight line, and isn't exactly roomy, but it has lots of funky features that I like. Continuing to downsize/pack.

Unfortunately I've also got a couple of applications out for apartments that DO have yards AND are in walking distance to school... UGH! What to do? What to do?

Oh no--how long since you put in the applications? Can you call whoever showed you the apartment and ask them how much longer it will take to review the application, because you have to decide about another place? I guess it depends on the rental market where you are--if there are more apartments than renters, they would hurry up the application for you. Otherwise, no.
How long do you have to decide about the offer?
