Recently Chris posted in her blog about an exercise she did in a support group. I love the idea so much I wanted to do it too, and with Chris’ blessing, I’m making a thread about it, hoping some others will also like the idea and want to participate. The exercise was to make a goal JUST FOR THE NEXT WEEK that will improve your mind, body or spirit. And, since this is SOS, I would add “or your home”. I know that on January 1st, many people make New Years’ Resolutions, with the best of intentions to keep them up forever. And, many are abandoned within a few weeks, because—well, change is HARD. Making new habits is hard. And committing to doing something forever (or for a year) is intimidating. Yes, there are some things I’m trying to improve permanently, and I hope to keep trying on a consistent basis for a long time. But, the idea of making a goal for just one week appeals to me so much. I can do just about anything for just one week! I don’t have to continue beyond the week. I can if I want, but making something better for one week is so much better than doing nothing. So, I’ve already come up with a list of things to do, one week at a time. If I’m able to improve how often I do these positive things throughout the rest of the year that’s great, but for most of them, I won’t. I’m only committing to one week. Please join me if this idea appeals to you. You don’t have to do every week of the year, you can do one week a month, you can pop in and do an occasional week when you feel like it, you can repeat the same goal for another week if you like what you’re doing, or have a different goal for each week that you participate. Some of the goals on my list for upcoming weeks are: drink my minimum daily goal of water, work on extra cleaning projects, do a visualization exercise every day, send an email or letter each day to people I’ve neglected to stay in contact with…the possibilities are endless. I’m going to start the week of January 3rd, I hope to have company! Diane

This is a great idea! One year C and I did monthly goals, which forced us to schedule the activities promptly since a month is pretty short when you only have weekends free!
I will have to think of what my first week's goal will be...probably something to do with time management, or drinking water.

Thanks Diane, great idea, I think it'll be useful to focus on one thing at a time.
My goal is to get stuff put away up the attic, there's all the Christmas trimmings and some stuff dumped in the spare room. I need to get some clothes down out of there too. Aiming to do it tomorrow as DH is back at work Tuesday. If I can get it done tomorrow the rest of the week I want to start taking my magnesium supplement again.

Oh yay, I'm so glad others like this idea. I'm going to wait to start next week, I have a very light week with paid work and I want to spend some time thinking about goals in general. I will still do the 2 month "winter goal", but that will be for things I want to concentrate on for a longer period of time. I already have about a dozen ideas for weekly goals. I'm looking forward to seeing what other people come up with. Diane

I really like this idea Diane. My goal for the week will be to clean off my coffee table and kitchen table once a day. They are my hot spots and are soooo difficult for me to keep clean. I will work on this for the next 15 minutes while I am waiting for the weather to come on.
It took 25 minutes to clean off the coffee table, the kitchen table, wash the dishes and get the coffee maker ready to turn on in the morning.
Thanks so much for this challenge Diane!

Last year my new Years Resolution was to exercise regularly. My goal was to exercise five days out of seven. having two days "of" gave me just enough flexibility to stick it out for five months. Well, I did quit after 5 months. but I'm convinced that's the way to go. You can do anything if you don't have to be PERFECT at it.

Great idea, dtesposito! I've really slacked off on water intake lately so the first week my goal will be to get back to drinking. I'll start with my large bottle twice filled; so 48 oz.

I'm going to start with a home goal. Kid spaces are being overhauled this week, perfect because Dd and dss are both here and we have a bunch of new stuff to make homes for.

I'm glad you made this thread Diane!!!! It's cool to know others are working on weekly goals too!!! This week I am starting on my goal to organize my closet. It's going to help me in all areas of activity because right now I can't find things -- everything is scrambled up and I need to group things like jackets, my bathing suit and things for the swim class, shirts, pants, as well as haul out what doesn't belong in my clothing closet so I can actually step in and reach things. Thankfully it's not too far gone, it's mostly a matter of like items not being hung together, and too many jackets crammed in where they don't really belong -- we have weird weather here in S. TX and you have to have light jackets, lots of layers because it does get drastically cold at times when you least expect. So my goal is to get that done before the 1st since it's not a big closet and it will help me prepare too for putting away decorations. I'm also working on goals for mind, body and spirit. It helps me to also look at the chart our counselor/depression support group facilitator gave us about the 3 categories, he tells us that doing things in each of these 3 areas - and 3 sub areas helps keep depression and anxiety lower -- and I've tried it and agree -- it really does help -- so now he has us each thinking of goals to work on week to week and then it's optional we can account for how we've done with the group meeting and also get help if we get stuck. This group SOOS is a great support place to do just that also!!!! These are the categories he breaks down for us: MindCommunicate with someone each day Educate/learn something new every day Meditate/do breathing exercise (3 deep mindful breaths 3 times a day) or any other meditation you like BodyExercise Sleep Nutrition - eat healthy and drink water Spirit/EnergyDo something for someone else - can be something very simple - or could be volunteering entirely personal to your life. Do something you like for yourself - fun - activity you like no matter how busy fit something in Practice whatever you believe in relationship to higher power, prayer, or spiritual practice you like ~ affirmations ~ tailor this to your personal belief I think that my closet work really falls into the Spirit/Energy category -- it's connected to everything I do that I be able to find the correct old clothing to go lawn mow at the church, my bathing suit needs to be accessible so I can exercise at the Y, and when I go in my closet and can find things easily, it's makes me much more likely to follow thru with my activities I choose to use my energy on. so here goes, finally getting off my chair to start!!!!! Thanks again Diane, I'm glad you made the thread and I will try to remember to come back and update and I'll be deciding on my 2016 goals too.

Hi Chris! Thank YOU for sharing this wonderful idea.
Educate/learn something new every day
I love this, I remember once I vowed to learn a new vocabulary word every day, so I would pick up the dictionary and open it at random and the first word I didn't know was my word for the day. Of course, I didn't continue it for very long, but it really was fun. I'm going to add learn something new every day as one of my "only for a week" goals.

Fireweed, that's a great goal! Five things doesn't seem too bad but would really mount up over time.
