After a great 10 day break in Melbourne (Australia), I’m home again and back into the de-cluttering and deep cleaning. My kitchen is now in maintenance, and I started on my dining/general purpose room this morning. So far I have thrown out 30 items, mainly junk mail, old bills and receipts plus a couple of books. Getting there bit by bit and with the help of a very practical weekly planner.
I am one of those people who needs to work to a plan otherwise I jump from one thing to another I am very much like the old lady who goes to take her rubbish out, notices that her car needs cleaning, puts the bag of rubbish by the bin while she goes inside to get her car keys. Then she notices that there is an unpaid bill next to her car keys and decides she will pay that first, but discovers she only has one cheque left She heads off into the bedroom to get changed to go to the bank and finds the TV remote control on her dresser. Better put that back where it belongs she thinks and heads off to the lounge room. On the way she notices that one of her pot plants needs watering, so she puts the remote control on the window ledge and goes down to the kitchen to get a jug of water and makes a cup of tea By the end of the day she is exhausted, she knows she has been busy but just can’t see any progress for all her efforts and she still can’t find that bloody remote control!
So my fellow posters that’s why I need to work to a set plan, and one of the best ones I have found is a free download from a site called “The Confident Mom” I have downloaded the blank 2016 planner and fill it in two weeks ahead on my computer, each week I print out the sheet for that week and use that as my guide. If I don’t get everything done that I have set for a particular day, I . tell myself very sternly not to stress about it, then cross it off the printed sheet and reschedule it on the computer for 2 weeks later.

Hi, friends! It is easier for me to let go of stuff if I know it is going to a good charity. I recently was able to make such a donation and let go of the following:
3 scarves 1 wall hanging 3 Christmas decorations 1 basket 1 cake icing decorator thingie 1 pie plate 1 plastic box 2 candle holders Six pieces of jewelry 5 purses 1 other handbag = 25 items
Also decluttered = 3 magazines
Gave away = 3 coffee mugs
Total = 31 items
I think this will get me off to a good start. It is very hard for me to let things go.

This week I have deleted 427 emails and thrown out another 55 items such as out of date medications, old statements, grocery receipts, several fitted sheets and a cracked glass turbo oven.
Also did the 80 kilometre round trip (50 miles) to take 6 boxes of unwanted kitchenware, linen and books to Op shop and mouse-proofed (I hope), 3 kitchen drawers. Here's hoping my efforts with the drawers work as well as they did for my pantry as I haven't seen any signs of mice there for a month now.

Oldgold's law - Just when you reach the halfway mark on the mountain an avalanche will stop you in your tracks.
Three days ago I passed the halfway point of getting rid of 2016 items and have been feeling very motivated and keen to get rid of the next thousand items. However, the very next day my dog got sick so it was another 80 kilometre round trip to get to the vet. Then we had to rush around doing some grocery shopping in a sweltering 102 degrees. Can't get groceries in our small town now because about six weeks ago a fifteen year old girl burnt down the town's only supermarket. (Her only regret she said, was that she did not kill or seriously harm someone).
After getting home I opened the under sink cupboard tri-fold door only to find it would not close, the hinges not surprisingly had rusted through after 32 years. Spent half the next day struggling to get those weird looking euro style hinges off the cupboard doors. Then I received word that my daughter-in-law in Western Australia was in hospital, so the rest of the day was spent online trying to co-ordinate bookings for a taxi, train, two buses and a plane that would arrive in Perth after business hours, but not too late so that my son could make the two hour return trip to pick me up.
In the meantime, the everyday "normal" mess has piled up and the rest of the week will be taken up with doctors and hairdressing appointments, trying to put new hinges on cupboard doors and making sure there is a month's supply of grocery essentials for son who does not drive. Am feeling very despondent at the moment because I was going so well, but will be so busy over in the west that I am scared of losing my impetus when I get back home.
Keep up the good work everyone, there is nothing like a little success to breed more success.

Thanks Saffron. The motivation I have received from this board has been great and I shall look forward to a friendly kick in the britches when I return home on 15th April. In the meantime big hugs to everyone trying to achieve 2016 items in 2016. Every item gone is a victory.
