This morning the Housing inspector came for my annual inspection. I was honest with her and told her even though the rest of my apartment is fine, my bedroom still needed work. She inspected everything and pretty much said the same thing. Then she took one look at me and asked what was wrong. Trying not to break down in front of her, I told her I'd been recently diagnosed with heart problems. She went ahead and gave me an "Average" rating because the rest of my home was clean -- but told me I needed to get the bedroom cleaned up as soon as possible, then call her so she can come back and inspect it. She said she'd seen my neighbor's apartments and they were so messy they were having roach problems. She didn't want the roaches to migrate to my apartment, so that's why she wanted this taken care of ASAP. She also told me if maintenance came over and saw my bedroom, they'd report me and then she'd get in trouble for passing me, so that's another reason why she wants this done quickly. I told her I'd call someone from my church to help and she thought that was a good idea.
So I called T., one of the ladies who came and helped get my home in order and left a message explaining what's going on and arrange a time for her to come and help with the bedroom. I'm waiting for her return call. So that's where things stand right now....I passed, but need to get my bedroom organized ASAP.

Rennie-I'm glad that most of the inspection went well for you. I suppose I don't understand how these inspections work. Is she requiring the work on your bedroom because it is just cluttered or literally a safety issue? I just don't understand how someone can tell you how to keep your home....

So glad the end is in sight for you, Rennie Ellen. I will pray that the ladies will get there this weekend at the latest, so it can be fully over.

Rennie Ellen, I'm glad things went well for you, but, like AnnieOkie, I don't understand how someone can tell you how to keep your apartment. Could someone let me know please. It really does seem like a lot of us are very worried about inspections. I can understand safety issues, but neatness? Thanks, skitter

Skitter and AnnieOkie,Rennie Ellen, I'm glad things went well for you, but, like AnnieOkie, I don't understand how someone can tell you how to keep your apartment. Could someone let me know please. It really does seem like a lot of us are very worried about inspections. I can understand safety issues, but neatness? Thanks, skitter I live in public housing. When I signed the lease, I pretty much gave Housing permission to enter my apartment for inspections and safety stuff like checking my smoke alarm and replacing furnace/AC filters. If I don't keep my apartment neat according to their rules, I can face eviction.
I guess they're really picky about keeping the apartments neat for safety reasons AND because clutter costs them money -- for pest control and maintenance repair mostly (mold, carpet cleaning, pet stuff, etc.). Their line of thinking is that a clean apartment = no bugs, mice, etc.
I feel victorious in that I kept the rest of my home maintained enough to pass, and the inspector sticking her neck out for me was very kind.

Thanks Rennie Ellen,
It sounds as though the authorities are really looking after the apartments. I guess that kind of attention makes your apartment buildings very nice. I have no idea how I would cope if someone could just walk into my house at any time. I think I'd be a nervous wreck. Congratulations to you!!!!!! I'm so glad you passed too, especially with all that you've been through! Cheers, skitter

Wow. I remember your stories about past inspectors and how mean they were. It's nice to see they have at least one nice person working for them. I hope the church lady is able to come over soon and whip that bedroom into shape.

Thanks, Rennie Ellen. I lived in public housing as a teen with my Mom, but I don't remember inspections. We may have had them, but I was a teen and not concerned about those things. Hope you can get your friends to help you get it all the way it needs to be.

Yes, this is strange. It seems a real invasion of privacy to me. If there are no complaints, then there should only be the usual quarterly inspection.
