Not very productive during the eight days since I last posted. Have spent more time running around like a chook with its head cut off than following my decluttering plan. To top it all off I spent almost all yesterday answering text messages from a friend’s daughter who wanted me to board her, her dog and horse for a couple of weeks until her husband and daughter arrived from interstate. (Presumably with her other dog, their six cats and a household full of furniture). Luckily, I am able to say NO quite firmly and stick to it despite some very strong manipulation and then several thinly veiled requests for a loan to buy a car “So I can live in it if I have to.” I am trying to get the clutter out of my life not accumulate more, and that includes parasitic people. Anyhow despite having very little time to follow my decluttering plan, I have still managed to box up the following 43 items to take to the Op Shop tomorrow. 15 pieces of good clothing, one or two never worn 2 handbags 1 pair of bathroom taps still in box 3 large storage jars 1 packet of curtain hooks 1 kitchen scale 20 books Total to date = 1055

100 items added from the freezer. Some how the door burst open while we were out of town . chicken fell on the floor, everything defrosted and went bad. Beware of over crowded freezers the door won't hold it!

Hi all
I am having some time off work while my youngest son settles into school. I am on Long Service Leave and have been off work for four weeks and have about five more to go. That is the first term of school for my son, here in Victoria, Australia.
I am getting really stressed and anxious about how little I have achieved in that time. My plan was to get my house sorted out so that when I go back to work full time in a few weeks, I can get someone in to clean it weekly for a couple of hours. I can't afford a cleaner but it is the only way I know that I can keep the house in order and work full time. I have to tidy up for the cleaner once a week and the house stays reasonably tidy. I have done this in the past but not for the last few years as I have been working part time and just couldn't pay for it. My house is now full of junk and such a mess that a cleaner would run away screaming and never return.
So I have to get things in order as it is the only way I know to keep things under control when I am working full time. I am a sole parent of two young boys and have been focussed on their care in the last couple of years but the state of the house now impacts on them because I don't like anyone to come over and we are always misplacing things that they need for school and there are things that need to be repaired but I don't want a workman to come in etc
I am getting panicky because although I feel like I am trying, I seem to be making no progress. I thought I might jump into this thread and see if I can get rid of some stuff because otherwise I just seem to be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
I don't think I'm really a hoarder, as I don't have trouble parting with things from an emotional point of view, but just don't get around to getting rid of stuff. I feel like I need someone to come and help me sort it all out, but I can't afford a professional and I don't know anyone I would want to bring into the place at the moment.
Right now I have a huge garbage bag of clothes sitting in the middle of the loungeroom. It has been sitting there for a few weeks. Every now and then I add something to it. It's like I think it has to be all done before I can get rid of it. So it sits there waiting for me to finish sorting the clothes and that is actually a gradual process. So I am going to get rid of it today. I also have massive amounts of kid's toys and clothes that need sorting and moving on, so it's going to take a while but I'm starting today.
I need to have my house tidy enough to get someone in to clean by the end of March. So let the decluttering begin!

Hello haywirehousekeeperThere's nothing more motivating to clean than knowing that a cleaner is coming in. Yes, it will take a lot of work to get one in.. but the reward will be great!

I took out another trash can full today. The empty can is already refilled for tomorrow. I think I may be at 500 items for 2017. Honestly i have lost count but 500 ish feels right.

Today I got rid of a large bag of clothing that was sitting in my lounge room. I was sorely tempted to get everything out to count how many items were in there but I resisted because I knew that would lead me to reconsider some things or delay me getting rid of them. I just picked it up and took it out.
I also returned a large kitchen pot that belonged to a friend and has been sitting on my kitchen bench waiting to go back.
I took out a large bag of rubbish to the bin.
So many more things that need to be removed but I've started.

I just reread my previous post and the line that stands out is "I just picked it up and took it out." It seems too obvious even to say but it's what I don't do. I make plans to get organised and deadlines to have it done by and systems to do it and generally overthink it all. It feels like if I just start doing things randomly it won't all get done, which is completely illogical. So in the spirit of just picking it up and taking it out:
I have just picked up 3 empty cardboard boxes that were lying around in different rooms in my house and put them in the recycling bin. I have thrown out three Christmas bags that have been sitting in the corner of my dining room with unwanted Christmas gifts in them
More to follow.
