Your boss sounds pretty decent. Do you think the "renovation" was their way to force some help on you?
From what you've said, it seems people already expect the worst of your room. After all this work, it's going to be much better than whatever they are expecting.
Hope you enjoy your well-deserved sleep after work tonight, but do come back to the forum once you're rested.

Good for you in talking to your boss. He sounds reasonable, and will work with you. That's really good. Realizing it doesn't have to be perfect, are you able to get in a nap before work, or is it time to start soon? I hope your night goes well.

It's time for work. I think first thing in the morning I'll attempt to get some more crust up from the carpet near the front door. Honestly, I think it will be worse than what they're expecting. Picking up garbage just uncovered stuff that was worse than what I was expecting. There's no way anyone will believe "hey it was much worse than this". But I know, and I know I filled up two dumpsters worth of giant garbage bags.

I wash my hands of the old room (literally. Had to scrub like a maniac). All the trash is out, which is miraculous. The bathroom has been cleaned, as have the wood surfaces. The main issue is the carpet, but since they plan on tearing it up and putting in hardwood anyway, I see no reason to obsess over it. I went down and spoke to the maintenance man this morning about what to expect. I told him I hated putting him in that situation. He said it's nothing but another job and that I shouldn't worry about it because he's my friend. I actually cried. It's the first time anyone around here has called me a friend in a very long time. Maybe I should try this reaching out and telling the truth thing more often.
Folks, you have no idea how much you've all helped me keep going through this nightmare. Just knowing I'm not alone has made a huge difference in how I see myself. Thank you so much and I will be around the boards since I want to maintain my new room. Oh gosh I need to unpack. But I've been awake for 35 hours straight so I think I should probably sleep first.

Great job!! It sounds like you are finding you have more support there than you expected. Getting a fresh start all around with management, co-workers and your place. Maybe as a sign of goodwill - you could suggest regular inspections. And, since it is a hotel - if some of the cleaning people are friendly - maybe they would be receptive to earning a little extra and cleaning your place once a week or so. Many of us have found that a key to staying in maintenance is having people coming to your place frequently whether it is workers you hire or friends/family. i straightened up this morning for our pest control service. Before maintenance - we went 15! years without any inside service Once you've rested - there are plenty of work along threads. Pick the ones that sound helpful or start your own. Welcome - you are off to a great start!! PC

OMG y'all the maintenance men are being so nice. I've apologized profusely but apparently they're just like "meh, we seen worse" I'm not sure HOW but okay, I'm sure they've run across some doosies in their time. As far as housekeeping goes, I was discussing that with a friend this morning. I feel weird about asking people to clean for me, but I figure I could spare a bit of extra cash for a tip, or offer to take her to lunch maybe. I could use the housekeeper as a weekly gauge. To celebrate, I had a TUB BATH. Do you know how long it's been since it's been safe enough for a tub bath? Nope, my environment has to stay clean so I can enjoy that bit of decadence more often. Bubbles and all. I'll definitely be sticking around. I want to maintain. (and I still have the unpacking ahead ) Thanks again everyone!

Welcome - you are off to a great start!! PC Oh my gosh, 15 years without pest control. My old room has been 2 years without it and it's pretty bad. There was a knock on my door this morning (new room) and I nearly jumped out of my skin in fear then realized - oh, this place is pretty clean . I want to remain able to open my door. But some good suggestions. Thanks!

Ah--that "jumping out of your skin" when someone knocks on your door--we even have a name for that! It's called "ghost squalor." !! Welcome to the board, rexd, and congratulations on making it through this ordeal! Arid

rexd - i'm sorry i didn't see your posts and intro to cheer you on yesterday but you did a FANTASTIC job!i'm so thrilled you talked to your boss who was understanding - it helps that he knows how sick you were with the anemia and wants you to put the past behind and get a new start. that tells me that he values you and is a decent person. and now you've found us! we're here in your corner for this and for your new life. Congratulations on getting your superpowers up for this - and you won't meet a better group of people than here -as evidenced by all the wonderful cheerleaders and supporters you had here. WELCOME! as for the co-workers: if they have never been sick or anemic, or are too young to have had any hard knocks or losses, they wouldn't understand - don't worry about them, they are not important at this time - YOU are! how wonderful that the maintenance man called you a friend - it seems the maintenance people see you- and you are not your mess. as for the others who judge and are mean - forget them! focus on the ones who care. How thrilling that you get to have your health back and a new beginning! i hope you are resting easy and catching up on sleep. we'll be here for you through the worst and the best. there are tons of great people here in maintenance!.

I'm arriving late too rexd too late to cheer you during your "clean-a-thon" I don't know if this will help and it might sound strange but just imagine your blood becoming iron enriched and your body just coming alive with strength and vitality. I have read that cooking your food in cast iron cookware puts iron in your food...but double check that.
