Everything! OK seriously. The broken recliner that a mouse had made it's home in until it "went away". I was so glad to get that nasty thing out of here!
Now I have a ton of stuff I am looking forward to getting out of her tomorrow.

Mounds of old clothes that I will never fit in again. And even if I do lose this weight I they would be so out of style I would not wear them. Gee I had some from the 1970's, how silly is that?

One BIG, old, box spring for under mattress, twin bed size. It was taller in height than most, must have originally been for hospital bed maybe. Made the bed too high. Had it for many years. Sister moved, and didn't need one she had. Fit better, bed looked normal, much ncer. Old used box spring -gone in trash.
Bought 4 nice wall shelving units years ago. About 3 ft long, with wall attachments. These were stored in bathroom cabinet under sink for years. Thought"will hang them someday", but never did. Realized they would just be more places to put yet more chotchki (I have too much of that already). Took them to resale shop, donated.
Um.... plastic containers like tupperware. Kichen bottom 2 shelfs were just packed with them. Took them all out, only kept about 1/3 of them. What is it with keeping sooo many of these containers? Gone!

All of it! Everything! Each little scrap of paper. pens with no ink, broken items, torn items, and *sigh* that is just scratching the surface. Next will be lots of boxes, a broken terrarium, a dead computer, two bags of trash in the entrance hall I would be willing to give a going away party to. Then there is the broken sofa sleeper that is currently my bed, a trashed rocker recliner that has to go and tons and tons of trash! It just can't go fast enough!!!!!

I have to agree with EVERYTHING! But there is one thing that made me feel especially good. When me and my home were at our worst, I had not been good about letting my dog out often enough. She started peeing on the room size rug that was in the room off the side of my kitchen. It stunk so bad. This was before I found SOS and I had realized my home was in trouble and it was one of the first steps on my journey to reclaim my home. I rolled that nasty carpet up and put it out for trash pick up..... and guess what.....someone took it from the trash pile. I don't know who would want that nasty thing, but I was glad to be rid of it! I mopped the floor and now just have a washable small rug there. I take better care of my dog and she rarely has an accident. If so, it's on the linoleum.

over the last 5 years, I have tossed immense amounts of stuff;
*trash *at least 200 big bags to charities *700 books (round one: to Goodwill) *another 150 books (round two: to library, church, goodwill) *tons of good stuff to our music collective for silent auction *25 years of music photocopies (all recycled) *30+ years of canning jars (all recycled---I kept just a few) *20 years of writing papers : early drafts etc (all recycled) *all my old aluminum pots & pans (most were 30+ years old and dented)
It is easier for me to identify the ONE ITEM that I'm sorry I tossed: a small pink satchel (Clinique: gift with purchase). ONE THING: in five years of making huge progress. To me, that is the TRUE triumph: only ONE (!!!!!) regret.

About 10-12 days ago I got rid of a chester drawers, a huge old-fashioned 32" tube tv, large heavy duty rusty metal shelves, and an excercise bike that no longer worked (among many other things). All these things were taking up waaaaay too much room, and I'm very glad to be rid of them.
They no longer allow dropping off furniture or appliances next to our apartment dumpster, and our county dump is over 50 miles away, so its a real pain to get rid of this sort of stuff. Luckily there's a thrift store nearby which took it all. (glad I have a station wagon, because other than the excercise bike, none of that would've fit in a regular car).
I feel bad taking them stuff that I know is in need of serious repair (such as my old chester drawers, which were falling apart, and the broken excercise bike), but I have no other way of getting rid of it....I make sure to take along some good stuff to the thrift store along with the bad, to make up for it.

These types of things really make it difficult for people to get rid of junk. In my little city, the dump is only open limited hours during the weekdays and one Saturday morning a month for about 2 hours. Big trash pickup is once a year. Even if people were able to make those hours (if one works "normal" business hours, it is impossible without taking time off work), most people don't have lifting help for large items.

These types of things really make it difficult for people to get rid of junk. I looked into those services that will haul away your junk for you, such as 1-800-Got Junk? I was flabbergasted to see how much they charge...I think it was around $250 for a quarter-truck load. I gave up on that idea very quickly!

I had a pretty good time tossing the two broken office chairs out the upstairs window of our barn/garage. They got hauled to the dump, along with enough junk to fill our big truck twice. Boxes for various equipment no longer in warranty (but the boxes were full of brown recluses!) were also tossed. I even found a box full of my husband's ex-wife's things in the garage, and they've been divorced for about 8 years. I asked my husband if I should throw it away, but he said he'd look at it later. I think the next time I'm up there, doing a major overhaul (which will have to wait until fall because it's too bloody hot right now), I'm going to toss it. I know he does not want to look at it (he won't even remember me telling him that it was up there), and there's nothing in it worth keeping; there's really nothing in it worth donating to Goodwill.
Now, if I could just get him to get rid of the bicycle taking up space in our garage.... He's not ridden it once in the 6 years I've known him, namely because he has bad knees and it's not good for them. I pumped the tires up and rode it around the pasture once, just to acclimate our horse to bicycles, and I have to say that's the most uncomfortable bicycle I have ever put butt-cheeks against. It's horrible!!! I'd rather walk than ride that thing. That, along with the bad knees could be a lot of the reason why he doesn't ride it; I have no idea why he wants to keep it. Maybe because he thinks that, one day, he will get really into exercise and want to ride it? Nevermind we have a stationary recumbant bike which is better on his knees and comfortable, not to mention a treadmill. We've got plenty of better things to exercise on than the torture bike. So here's hoping I can eventually list it on Craigslist.

Recently - things I wasn't that fond of that had been on the floor where a mouse had been around e.g. a small fabric bag that was a freebie from a magazine but a lot of it was ephemera like receipts (which I do normally keep, though it's crazy) and trivial stuff like plastic bags and cardboard boxes that I keep to recycle as can be useful: however, seeing them as "dirty" because of the mouse made it easy to think "Emergency situation: these things are not at all important and can be tossed". However, there are some nicer things (e.g. really nice fabric bags) that I will have to wash as too nice to toss. I have plenty more of that kind of thing yet to do....

On the other hand this sounds like a bargain, compared to what those POD storage things cost. (The drop off a container in front of your house and you fill it, and then, I am not sure, they store it?) I am certain that there are many people who are paying that much for a storage locker. In my own case, I am giving up the extra income I could get bu renting out my extra bedrooms. Good reasons for tossing! SG
