Hi all --
Sorry I haven't posted in a long time. I think about coming over here (I'm still living in my horribly cluttered home), but watching the Hoarders show brought everything back to the front burner.
I'll post some "before" photos in the photo section after making this post. The Hoarders show has really gotten to me - it made the mess in my house boil over into the unacceptable mode in my mind and I made the decision to do something about it. Everything in here is just all too much and is bigger than me....I cannot do it by myself. Through a contact I made on the show, I have been referred to a Professional Organizer who specializes in Chronic Disorganization. (I have a wicked case of chronic disorganization!) I have hired her and she and a teammate are beginning work on Oct. 26 to help me reclaim my house - we hope to have the downstairs down within 3-4 days. I do not look forward to the purge/organize process but am eager to get to the goal line of reclaiming control and turning this house back into a home. I'm fearful that I will get easily overwhelmed by all of the stuff and just sort of shut down in trying to move forward. However, this is why I have hired the PO - they can walk me through this, make things move more quickly, and they know what they're doing - I'll honestly admit that I don't know diddly about organizing and that bulb just does NOT turn on in my brain.
I've had a rough 10 years and my surroundings have suffered. I'm completely embarrassed that things are in the shape they're in and it's way past time I did something about it. My PO says that CD is something I will always fight, but if I try to keep a handle on it and call her in to help when things get off-kilter then we can keep everything on track.
I fluctuate between being excited and feeling dread/anxiety over this process. Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I'm overwhelmed but have made a commitment to get this done.

Congratulations on taking the big step of getting an organizer. I cannot do that yet and am plugging along on my own bit by bit. You are going to have it all done in 4 days, that is so nice.

Hi there, It does sound exciting, and overwhelming. I am so glad to hear that you'll have help with this. I would love to have someone come in and help me with all the dumb stuff I get hung-up on. I too have always been messy, it's just something that I do and I never have known why, I doubt I ever will. Please keep coming back here, it makes life so much nicer to have a place like this to share.

Thanks to both of you!
I need to post photos to keep me on track, focused and up-front about my issues. I need to be honest about it and face the issue of being chronically disorganized.

I checked out your pictures - I absolutely think that it's do-able in 4 days especially with help. You may have to deal with CD always BUT I think having a "home" for things and knowing where that home is will be a huge help. And honestly ...the anticipation is probably worse than the actual act will be. You can do this!!

I think you've made a great decision. It would be such a relief to have most of it done in a few short days. Just keep telling yourself that you CAN do it and it WILL be worth it--- because it will!
Good luck to you! Wendy

A professional organizer sounds like a fun 4 days! I am sure those ladies will be a very positive influence on you. Enjoy your time with them!

I haven't posted in forever, but I'm so glad to see this thread. I have been trying to dig out on my own, and I too have been watching "Hoarders" and following the threads both here and on A&E.
Yesterday I called a professional deep cleaning company to get a quote on my house, both inside and out. They're coming on Friday to do a walk through.
I'm nervous to have someone see the mess, but I'm excited to finally tackle it. I'm not really a hoarder as much as I'm overwhelmed and chronically disorganized. I don't want the stuff here anymore.

I've been working on bits & pieces in the house since my original post. I've made some headway but am still overwhelmed.
The organizer is still set for Monday. Can I please ask for mojo and good vibes for getting good sleep, having a lot of energy, and being successful with this task?
I'm beginning to have some anxiety. My two kitties will be staying at a friend's house during the day while we're purging and I'll be worried about them as well. It's all a bit much but I'm ready to get it done and over.
I think my true fear is the chronic disorganization. We'll get this house cleaned out & organized, but how long before clutter begins to show? I have to wrap my brain around this!

Wow, sounds like a great opportunity! Hope it goes well. I just watched all the A&E Hoarders - downloaded them on ITunes. I could sure relate to the Jennifer and Ron episode, my house was like that when my kids were younger. Can relate to Jill also, my fridge is always piled up altho I only have 1 and an apt. size freezer. Also I can sure relate to Linda, that is me now, kids moved out and a house full of junk, finally starting to do something about it myself, wish I could afford an organizer.

I'm already exhausted and the organizer hasn't even arrived. I had to get the cats over to a friend's house by 6:45 so he could leave for work. So much for a well-planned day. I don't do well with early mornings (I work *much* better in the late afternoon/evening). Perhaps today won't be a struggle and we can get a good flow going....but the organizer didn't want to have the kitties here. She is due here at 9:00.

Hi. I'm really excited for you today. You are starting down the path of being organized. It will be a little scary to start with, but you will do just fine. Keep telling yourself how much better you are feeling now that you are taking steps to change your life. Keep telling yourself that you ARE becoming an organized person (self-fulfilling prophecy.) You CAN and WILL do this!! I'm looking forward to your posts to let us know how you are doing. You will be helping others because we will see your success and find the motivation and courage to start down the path that your are on. Can't wait to hear about the progress that you make today.
