my house is still a mess and I'm working on that- still. But I think I hit a huge breakthrough 2 months ago when my drugs doctor (who prescribes my anti-depressants) said she thought I have ADHD. She tested me last month and said she's very sure I have ADHD. What kills me about this is that nobody has ever mentioned this to me my entire life. I started to research this a little because beyond what most people know about it, I really didn't know much about ADHD. The more I read, the more I knew she was right. This is HUGE for me because it explains for me so much about myself and my issues over the years. It's like someone openned the skies and let me in on an huge secret. I couldn't be happier because I feel as if now I finally have an honest chance to get a handle on things. What I REALLY want to share with everyone is these podcasts that I found before I was diagnosed with adhd. They are called the iProcrastinate podcasts. iprocrastinate.libsyn.com/. They are done by Dr. Pychyl who is a research psychologist and professor at Carleton University in Canada. He's researched procrastination for years and has a lot of knowledge to share about it. I have learned so much about myself and about procrastination thru these podcasts that I feel I finally have a chance to overcome it. Procrastination is , i'm sure, the bane of many of our existence. So I felt I couldn't keep it to myself and had to share it. He also has a blog on Psychology Today which I have not checked out yet. I'm still having so much fun listening to the podcasts. I am not caught up with the podcasts because I started from the first one, but so far he has touched on the connection between it and depression and even adhd. So that's all guys. Have a great week!

Yay you. Welcome to the club. Those podcasts are great. Wish I could get them onto a cd so I could play it in my car. Thanks again for the link. I wish you'd start a blog. Just wishing. Think about it.

Eaglesflight: ROFLMAO!!!!
Either right before or about the time I found the original SS, I figured out from seeing a talk show on ADD that I also have it. No formal diagnosis, but I know. Once I figured it out, life really started changing for me. Not only did I start finding new coping strageties, i discovered I'd actually developed many of the recommended coping strategies on my own over the years. I only wish I'd know this when i was young instead of having to learn and do the hard way. It was very relieving and empowering for me to find out what made me tic. The one thing i really hate, and not only about ADD, but any of those D classifications, is it is categorized as a 'disorder', automatically indicating something is 'wrong' with us, when in fact, while we may be different, there is SO much RIGHT with us! What about the positives of our personalities, like our extraordinary capacity for patience, intuitiveness, creativity, empathy and compassion. I really think if a positive moniker was hung on it, instead of deficit disorder, everybody would want ADD. Fivecat

Thank you Perfect Mess for the tip about the iProcrastinate podcasts. I listened to severall tonight and I really enjoyed learning something about the psychology of procrastination. I admit I could not understand all that he was saying as he is a professor and used alot of technical terms but he has a very easy going speaking manner and a caring spirit.
This is the first podcast I've listened to and found I could have it running on my computer and be working in the room at the same time = neat!

Gosh it must be quite common amongst us messies, as I also have ADHD and a mild case of aspergers also. It sure would have been easier for me to have found out these things when I was younger, as I always just thought I was a freak. Thanks for the link I will check it out.

My daughter was pulling A's in fifth grade, then suddenly her grades took a dip. I went to School Night, opened her locker and found it stuffed with unfinished assignments. I pulled everything out, brought it home and asked her "Why?" she got very upset. I talked to her pediatrician, who suggested seeing someone about ADHD. Yup, she has it. Then I noticed she was just kike me. Lots of interests, always taking on new projects, rarely finishing. She went on medication called Adderal. literally "Speed" but in people with ADD it does the opposite-it helps you focus. Her behavior and schoolwork improved within weeks. Part of her treatment required daily phone calls to her teachers to see if she was keeping up and doing her assignments on time. She's now 21 and in college. She attends part-time , taking only as many credit hours as she feels comfotable with. I know she will graduate one day. As for me, I'm doing housework as well as I can. I'm working on getting to the magic land of maintenance. My motto is "Progress Not Perfection."

I would just like to note that I have had your link open in my browser for three days and have been procrastinating on starting the downloads. Well, that's why you're procrastinating. You're planning on "starting the downloads". So let me guess, the perfectionist inside says you have to download every last one before you can listen to any? Just pick one (maybe the first, maybe the most recent) and just listen to it from the browser. I swear you will learn something from it. Good luck!

sunnyday: SOOO happy you like them! Aren't they great? I found another podcast on adhd that is great. Ive listened to several of them. It's called ADHD Coach Talk www.blogtalkradio.com/add-adhd-coachingFivecat: It's a disorder when it disrupts our lives, which it can. There are 'traits' that can be good and superior to 'normal' people, like our ability to hyper focus (which I sooooo do) and our interest in many different things, but sometimes it's a downright thorn in our side. Once you learn how to manage your attention better and it stops being a disruption, then it stops being a disorder. fluffernut: my daughter has adhd as well and one thing I'm noticing so much now is that she becomes very frustrated with her little sister and just can't handle it. She might even growl like some animal at her, tears streaming down her face. It's going to be a long several years. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a lot of us here have ADHD. It's just so hard to focus on such BORING tasks like keeping a clean house. I'm doing house work today and am about to DIE it's so mundane and boring. But I'm doing it, my head full of words from Dr. Pychyl in the iProcrastinate podcasts.

Actually, I've been organizing the music on my mp3 player and wasn't ready yet to add to the list of things. I went ahead and downloaded the first three when I downloaded my usual weekly podcasts, even though I wasn't done organizing the music. I consider that an accomplishment.
