I saw 4 rats running out of my sun conure's cage this evening. Minutes later, my husband saw 3 rats running from the same cage. Maybe they were the same rats and had just gone back to the cage after I left the living room. A little later, I walked into the living room and saw one rat that appeared unsure if he should run away or stay put in the cage. He eventually ran out but not before giving me a good stare and thinking about it for a while. Obviously these rats are getting really comfortable going in those cages.
Yesterday there was one rat inside a big cardboard box I use to store packing peanuts (not food). And on Thursday last week I saw one fatso rat trying unsuccessfully to escape into a crevice between the dish washer and the cabinet.
Anyway, Tonight I finally gathered up all the traps (which I had stopped resetting due to the bloody gross factor, and I soaked them in bleach, scrubbed them down, and rebaited the. I have set 5 traps in and around the cages and 4 more traps in other areas around the living room and kitchen.
Wish me luck. (I can't believe we're still trapping rats in this house!)

Absolutely wish you the best of luck with this thing. I know it's unpleasant but you cannot allow those rats to take over. They're smart, relentless, able to HURT that bird and the whole household. Not just with their waste but also the fleas they bring along everywhere.
Have you found their entry points? I put my trap cage where they were coming in and after a week, we're finally seeing real results - for the second night in a row, no signs of mouse/rat activity. However, OUTSIDE is a different story. We've obviously got to run them out of the garage and near the side fence. Progress can be in inches sometimes. I suspect it's a permanent problem in many areas. (I live in a city teeming with wildlife near housing.) We just have to keep them at bay and away from where the family spends time.

Wow, 5 more trapped. WTG! I think your work on cleaning the traps and relocating them has obviously worked!

PerfectMess - what do you do with the, um, remains? I've been bagging (now double bagging) mine and tossing them into the trash can but OMG! After a couple of days of recordbreaking heat, that trash can is so ugly to smell, I'm holding my nose and spritzing OdoBan in it constantly.
Sometimes maintenance is really a HUGE problem. It takes effort to establish the habit, then along comes a whole new barrier: stinky trash can that makes you want to hold onto paper trash until JUST before the garbage truck comes along. Changes in routine can be fatal to efforts to establish new habits.

Omg my moms contractor found old dead baby rats on top of her built in microwave!!!!! My mom was freaking out. It looks like they are old, one was a skeleton and we don't think there is an active infestation. Is that possible do you think? We have no signs of rats other than finding the two old bodies. You are the resident rat expert now perfect mess! what do you think?

I've been dropping them in trash and taking the bags outside before they start to smell.

I finally did put down a snap trap behind the fridge - and weirdly, mice stopped going there. I'd been unnerved at having them in the kitchen. But I realize now, they go everywhere and are constantly trying to expand their rule of the house.
