I just HAD to type a reply 9.5 years later. I've read a handful of my old posts tonight and THIS one was surprising. I can't remember some of what I put in the first post I do remember animal control coming to my house and my skin&bone 17 year old dog. I'm pretty sure 2014 was the year he died. Bullet, was his name. The one thing that I kept asking myself while reading all this was... where was my husband? Why wasn't he trapping rats and calling roofers? Why was I doing all the work? I just don't remember him doing any of that work back then. I can't remember what he was doing. Anyway... I also don't remember thinking that it was a member of this forum who called animal control on me. I only remember coming to a conclusion about who it was who “ratted” me out based on the name. Sounded Hispanic. I decided that it must have been one of the women from the original cleaning crew of 5 who reported it even tho it didn't make sense. That description never really fit the house imo. I've never been a hoarder. Just crazy to me. But somehow I decided that's who it might have been because the name was Hispanic. But in retrospect, it could have been the member half a world away with a fake name. I know I stopped posting here in 2014 so I should tie a bow on this thread with a final update. We found out that the rats were using our house like some kind of hostel frat house. The rodent exterminator dude showed me pictures with proof that there was a rat super highway up there (oils from the rats left a path well-marked). He said fixing the hole alone probably wouldn't stop them from chewing a new hole to get in because they can smell the scent coming from the attic and would want to get back in. We needed to have all the insulation in the attic sucked out, the attic sanitized (some process involving steam / chemicals / fog / i can't remember), and new insulation installed. It wasn't cheap but it needed to get done. We never caught another rat in that house after that. We lived in that house 3 more years after that, sold that house, and moved to another state and into a new house. I've never seen a rat/mouse/cockroach in this house, but we did have a black widow spider nest/web removed from my bathroom cabinet before moving in.
