Welcome, All, to a wonderful SOoS Tradition: the 2023 Things thread! The goal: to get 2023 items out of our homes by the end of 2023 The method: that is up to you!
You might imagine that 2023 things is a huge number and that only those with the worst hoards could manage it, but I've got a secret for you:
Even if you don't have squalor, or behavior recognized as hoarding, you might have enough extra stuff to do this challenge too. Lots of people have "clutter," even if there is room for it in your home.
You might also imagine that 2023 things is WAY too many to consider, but let's do the math: That's just FIVE AND A HALF THINGS A DAY! That's it! Five things one day, six things the next! (And seven things once a month, or so.) 2023 divided by 52 weeks = 38.9 You can toss 40 things in a week! Or even a weekend. No problem! and as long as I have my calculator out, I'll do the month (but it's a bigger number, so you might want to skip this one) 2023 divided by 12 = 168.6 Past participants have counted every little thing, or counted boxes or bags of things.
Some of us count papers by the sheet or inch or bundle.
We've counted trash, donations, gifts, and the release of habits, weight, and even people!
Jump in when and how you like, or just drop in to cheer us on.
Everything we get rid of is a great accomplishment, even if we miss the mark.
Won't you join us? You've got nothing but clutter to lose!

Today I tossed a kitchen towel that I never really liked. It was ugly, so I don't know why I kept it - until now. Buh-bye, ugly towel!
Count: 1 / 2023

I joined SOoS 1/1/20 and have done this challenge every year since - over 7,000 items counted - more not counted! I still have more than enough items to release for 2023 ie the shed (which in FL is like our basement) has NEVER been touched.

1/1/23
Went thru a small sack of mail from 2018 that was in the big stack of papers on one of my dining room chairs: (this was a sack of mail that my neighbor had collected for us while we were out of town--it's not that we don't go thru our mail -- it's just that we don't go thru all of it and we may pull out only the important things & put back the things we open or leave out the things that we don't have time to open because we kinda know what they are... and mean to either toss, shred or recycle and/or file at a later date. It's a bad habit that we have needed to overcome for years! We need to learn to put things where they go right away... must have a place for things, must decide whether we need to keep the items, and must go thru them if we set them aside to go thru later.) 23 papers into recycle bag 10 papers into trash 1 magnet into trash 1 paper sack to be recycled
35 so far ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From ottoman in my den: Tossed: 2 leg compression sleeves from before my Dad died when we took him out of one of the Nursing Homes that he was in during 2021. The type that has little tubes to inflate them that you attach to the pump at the end of the bed.. 2 bags from the same place Strip of caps that were for capping off the IV bags
1 paper put in recycle bag from 2021 from Careflite
41 so far ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1 paper into recycle bag 2 packagings into trash

Thanks, goldenthreads, for continuing this initiative in 2023! Gave three pairs of sandals to my dear friend/helper (DF/H). Designated two pairs for donation. Went through some mail to shred or recycle boxes: total about 8, unless you count all the pieces of paper and envelopes individually. Went through a pile of books and designated 5 for donation. Agreed to allow a box with about 5-6 items, on of which is a rug that got wet/possibly moldy, and had mouse droppings on it. It may be the one I carried back from Tunisia. That was not easy. Total: 24

Happy New Year, everypony! I don't think I have 2023 things to declutter, so this year I will include things belonging to
DVD (I am trading reduced rent for help with de-hoarding),
Lady Di (who still has stuff in the attic),
LR (whom I have been helping with her wardrobe),
and DPs (the never ending story) that I facilitate getting out of the house.
currently I have some cardboard in my car for recycling but I won't count those until I can put them in the bin later in the week.

Ah, if only I'd seen this before the professional organiser visit yesterday. I have no idea how many items a car load of junk is but it was approximately a lot.
Things I can remember from yesterday: 1 coat 2 tents 1 pair scissors 1 office chair 4 packs of pencils (why so many? I have no idea) 4 bags of general rubbish 3 bags of recycing 1 old phone 1 old stool
So I'm counting that as 17 items
Today I'm short on energy and motivation, but I've got rid of: another bag of paper recycling a friend's towel a christmas pudding I can't eat
Things from today:
