Hi Illuminata, someone once posted this on-line bookshop address: www.betterworldbooks.com/ - free shipping within the US, $3.97 anywhere else in the world. I have found them very good for hard to get books, and the site supports literacy aims world wide. I think scanning the patterns you really like is a good idea, for the books where you don't need every page!

I finally returned the bag of library books and avoided any fines. They were due Wed next week but I had renewed twice just dragging my feet on returning them. So glad that is done.

I want to participate. I have books that were loaned to me by at least 4 different friends that I've had for a year. They need to go back. I never ask to borrow books because this has been known to happen before. But when they are handed to me as a loan, I get into trouble. With one friend, I didn't like the books they lent me, but I am known as a reader, and so I felt obligated and ashamed at not finishing the books and didn't want to return them. I am going to put this on my to do list. Thanks!

Got the video game in the mail today and canceled my Game Fly membership. One less unnecessary bill each month.

Yay...got my library fine paid (twenty bucks??? Wow, when I checked online a few days ago it was about five bucks), and returned Aladdin, but not without a few snags. Got to town for my eye appointment, went to return it, and neither disc was in there... Went all the way back home to get the discs. My kids had told me it was ready to go, so like an idiot I took their word for it. But it's done!

Lucky you! I had quite a few books out when I had a sudden, debilitating illness and could no longer leave the house. Had no one to help me and, frankly, between trying to deal with everything else and just stay on the planet, the library books fell off my radar screen for a very long time. Now my account is in collections and the collection agency fees and fines alone added several hundred dollars on top of the book replacement costs. I accept full responsibility for this; just want to warn everyone what could happen. I don't know what you could do now, but your library might waive the fines IF you explained the situation. I was in this situation once. Actually, my disability was anxiety over leaving the house. My library has a drop off/pick-up service and they made an agreement with me, about returning my books, and I was able to still enjoy library services until I felt more able to face the world. In your situation, I am pretty sure that my library would have waived the fines if the material were returned or paid for. But once time passes, it is hard to say how they would handle it. So if anyone is in a situation of avoiding the library due to physical or emotional reasons, you may be entitled to use these services. Please call your library, and at least you may be relieved of worry for this one small item. And the worst they can do is say no, and you are not any worse off! But I think it may depend also on the arrangement between the library and the collections company.

Yesterday I found a library item costing several hundred dollars which had been AWOL for over six months. I have been able to renew it for most of that time. Dropped that off today! There are a couple of books still AWOL, but at least those are not too expensive. Hopefully those will turn up soon, now that I no longer have a couch for things to hide behind.
I enjoy a very good public library system, and I STILL have difficulty with owning too many books. I can't imagine what my place would look like if I felt that I could not use the library!
My worst situation was when I was leaving town for an extended period, and I had about 75 items checked out. Not owning a car, it took many trips to return all the books that I could put my hands on. Now I try to make an effort to return twice as many items as I expect to pick up. My library has a very liberal renewal policy. There is a maximum number of renewals (and I have hit it, at times), but an item can be renewed for over a year, depending on demand for the item. I am not sure if this is a blessing or a curse for me!

I really wish that my local library offered an email service, which would send out a reminder a few days before a book is due. It would be a HUGE help for me, since our library lets us keep books for a month at a time (media is kept for 5 days). I often forget when a book is due and/or I lose/throw away my receipt which tells me when it is due. I guess I should be grateful that my library has a website at all, such as the pathetic thing is. They just recently let people in the county and other townships within the county come in and do anything at all. But an email service would be awesome.

Lumy: Whenever I check out anything from the library, I write its due-back date on my BIG kitchen calendar.
Also, I have a separate "pile" where I place all library items. That way, those books don't get mixed in with all my other books. It's always easy to find them.

Great thread - I just updated my Netflix queue, and I'm on the way to the library. Too late to pay the fines today but at least they won't grow. And no I never did listen to the books-on-CD I borrowed - could not find the portable cd player. No more renting those until it is found and has fresh batteries!
