I'm here to issue a challenge! My a/c isn't working that great - maint. will come out to check it out tomorrow - but until then, I've been relying on my ceiling fans. I have one in my bedroom that I have on all the time. Did you know that dust can stick to it even when it is going around and around? When I went to turn it up, dust started falling like snow! So I turned it off and got to cleaning. OMG. It was horrifying!!! So my challenge to all of you with ceiling fans, try to give them a clean in the next few days! I have three in my place - I just did one yesterday but will try for the other two today!

I've complained about that before--how can dust stick to something that's continually moving at a high rate of speed? Isn't that against the laws of physics???

I'm wondering: has anyone expiremented with spraying the blades with non-stick cooking spray? I might try that and see whether it helps keep the dust from sticking.

Actually, that is exactly why dust sticks to the blades. Stickiness. Have you ever looked at the blades in the fan inside your over-the-stove hood? Grease first, dust second, makes for a horribly dusty, sticky mess.
How does it get into rooms where you don't cook, you may ask? Well different things travel through the air, room sprays for example. Hairspray, even FreeBreeze (spelling) is sticky. Dust adheres to stickiness.
ETA: Furniture polish and many soaps and other things we use to clean with can actually turn sticky with heat and if not rinsed well.

Once I got all my ceiling fans cleaned when I decluttered I make it a point to wipe them down at least once a month with the swiffer with the longer handle. I don't however do the lights on the fans each month. I think doing them with just the spring and fall cleaning should be sufficient and just pass the swiffer duster over the lights when I do the fans monthly.

one of my pet peeves. have no ceiling fans -- as in, hang where the light is types.
but -- I have fans going all the time in various places in the house.
and -- my G-d!! -- do they accumulate big fat greasy gobs of dust. ugh!! they need cleaning once a week. not that I am remotely perfect about it.
but this is an occasional necessary add-in to maintenance.
and poo on whoever made fans that don't open!!

I have very high ceilings and even with a special extendable ceiling fan duster, I can't reach the one in my bedroom. It's a problem because I can see the dirt/dust on the blades. I also can't change the burned out light bulbs inside the fan or the ones in the even higher ceiling in the living room. And I've bought an expensive tool to do that, too, and it's just not long enough. Perhaps a combination of ladder and tool would work but I'm not physically able to climb a ladder right now. Funny how these things don't really occur to you until something goes wrong...

Don't have the ceiling ones - but have cleaned box fans by taking off screens - put in bath tub - then clean bath tub - clean off blade carefully - clean out motor - qtips work well - make sure it is all unplugged and completely all dry before plugging back in - and it works better after - time consuming and dirty work - but they last longer. Of course you have to do one at a time cause it is hot and you need to use the other one - .

I am with you on this one Lilith, it does seem like one of those things where the spinning blades should THROW THAT DUST OFF so that it can fall like gentle rain...

DD has to get on a ladder to reach it for me and then use the swiffer with the long handle. I had to get that ladder advertised on TV... The Little Giant.

Just a few months ago.... I did my bedroom one the longest time ago. It is hard to get to. That is a lame excuse, but it is what I tell myself. I hate the kitchen one. It is the greasy junk that is just so frustrating. I get tired of trying to clean it so I do a bare minimum with it. I am not sure how much cleaner I will get them before I leave this place!

I don't have ceiling fans, but I have several of the stand alone type, and I do clean them because when I have them blasting in my face, I don't want last year's stale dust blasting at me too. Plus it's super obvious if the fan blades are white or pale grey. I have a couple of black tower fans I do not know how to get into, I'm just going to imagine/pretend that they never get dirty.
Make-up remover wipes are very good at getting the crud off the blade as they cut through the grease and mine leave a nice cucumber scent.

I am ever so thankful to the persons here who told me to use an old pillow case to clean the fan blades....I have not done it yet...(six or so months later) but I know how to do it...my kitchen sucks it up onto the ceiling.....there is a circle of dust on the ceiling and the blades are caked with dust....the bedroom fan is blade dirty but not stuff on ceiling....living room fan is blade dirty too....I guess someone is pushing me eh? get er done eh? I guess I need to pick the silly pillow case that I will use...I have one short pillow case that is too short...it was from a second bedroom sheet set so I got one hugely long pillow case and one way too short...so it will be the shorty one for my kitchen first...need to get everything else out of the way for stuff dropping from the roof/ceiling.....it will be some mess in there.,....guess after dust removal comes the Mean Green Cleaner to scrubb off the grease and grime....gosh now I have a project for the weekend....hugs btt as if I do not have a thousand other projects for the weekend...one being to cut up the huge branches from fallen out of tree that I collected in back yard for the burn pitt....chain saw needs to be used here....got to decide when that happens...no rainy day for it too muddy out there....and electric chain saw could short out...if I use that one over the gas one....ugg I got lots of work to do....hugs btt
