hmmmmm.... I was at the mall last evening. DD is looking for a prom dress and wanted another dress besides. It is normally very difficult to find clothes that fit her. (Last year I altered a dress, but it was harder than I thought it would be.) We found JCP had a 50% off sale, and found both a short dress, size 1, and a long dress 3/4, that fit her perfectly, no alterations required, plus a casual sun dress also 50% off... so, I I'm not sure whether this is a good or a bad thing. I guess we will have to go through her closet now (and to be honest, her floor, and everywhere else, and find several things to go out.) and to be perfectly honest, there are these very pushy women at some of the malls around here that sell beauty products form the dead sea. I was aproached by one and just walked away, the second one I made eye contact with, and that was a mistake! The next thing I knew, she was buffing and polishing my thumb nail... my nails are among the nastiest nails on earth, and when she was done it was shiney and smooth... and I bought it hook line and sinker. The next thing i knew she was trying to convince me that i should buy one for every female I know... for an EASTER gift! I don't even give Easter gifts. Somehow I did walk out of there with 2 packages. (She actually had 3 of them in my bag at one point.) So I have been BAD. but i do have a nice looking thumb nail on my right hand.

I have been sick, so no going out and about for me! I did go to the post office and bought a book of "forever stamps", picked up the mail and left the junk mail in the recycle box. I did NOT get anything at the craft shop/auto tag place where I had to go twice to renew my tags and pick up the sticker.
Hmm, I am baking a loaf of gluten-free bread that I really do not need all for myself... does that count as an un-needed thing? I will have to remember to freeze it in slices so I do not eat it in one day!

I've been doing real well with processing the mail right away. Mail is my main acquisition issue. I'm now tossing the Saturday Los Angeles Times crossword. Which I completed. And has "sidestep" as a clue! . That was a sign that it was time to get back to work!

I went to an informational community event recently. Everyone wanted to give me a brochure.
I said NOOOO!!! rather loudly to each person. They were a bit startled!
I stated simply that I don't need any more stuff. And that I promised that I would google them when I got home.

A bookstore near us is closing and I love books, but after throwing out all of the books I have this past month it was easy to not leave the store with anything. So I am being better about not bringing more items in than I take out. Thanks for the interesting thread Msdare.

omg - this thread terrifes me and intrigues me! i hoard. i acquire. my acquisition lists are long. my release lists are short. it will be interesting for y'all to observe someone out of control try to gain control.
i'll come on this thread when i can, and list the non food items i acquire. i'm not on sos regularly - wish i were. i am happy to say that last weekend i did not go to any yard sales or the Exchange so did not acquire anything there. that is huge. i did acquire some free sidewalk chalk from a friend. haven't used any yet.
yesterday i acquired 10 dahlia tubers, putting my total of dahlias back up close to 100. i have no garden space ready for them yet. argh. must finish building garden by june or it'll be too late to plant them and have them bloom.

I love the idea -- this thread is awesome! Yesterday I went to a birthday party and was given 2 grocery bags of kids jeans that supposedly I might need for the material (I make purses from pant legs sometimes) -- and it also had among it 2 really bad shape skirts. I looked everything over in the car and realized it was too far gone for me to use and that I won't use it -- but I think I did the person a favor by taking it because apparently they couldn't throw it away. So I threw it away. And I was so proud Today I had to run errands for MIL and DH and I purposely kept my money at home. I know that in the pharmacy (Walgreens) I get tempted by every kind of thing. So far today I have acquired nothing new except mail and that I sorted, recycled, and shredded and filed/paid a bill.

I also think this thread is a great idea, we need a constant reminder to think about everything we take home.
I've been doing really well with this (except for books, which I bring home every time I go to the thrift store, which is several times a week!). However, I still lapse occasionally on non-book items. I was walking a dog down an alley and saw that someone had thrown away 6 of those stacking plastic storage things--the ones shaped like the old vegetable bins. They were dirty, but looked new other than the dust and cobwebs--it looked like someone bought them new and stuck them in their basement for a few years, then decided they didn't want them after all. Yes, I took them. But, they will fit perfectly in my pantry where I currently have a small, rickety rolling cart thingy. Since I'll have a chunk of time tomorrow, maybe I'll scrub them up in the back yard of my building where the hose is.
I know some people who are moving and they keep asking me if I want this or that, and I've been able to say NO to everything! So overall I've been doing okay except for the books.
I'll think of this thread the next time I'm offered something and remain strong!

msdare, lioness gave me the link to this thread and i posted once. the idea of this is brilliant, and hopefully being able (for a hoarder like me) to have more outgoing than ingoing. part of that is being honest about what comes IN. my acquiring had really been ramping up in the last 6 months or so. last week i had a bad fall, am injured enough that i can't work (gardener) and therefore i now have no income along with a very bad financial year. i use acquiring as a stress-release, much like someone binge eats to deal with stress.
having no incoming money has made me HAVE to stop acquiring. so i am going to try to write on this thread when i come onto sos, which unfortunately isn't too often, but hopefully i can make a weekly tally of what comes in and what goes out. more came in this week than went out.
went to the exchange today (our place by the dump where you can get used stuff for cheap). o brought nothing there, but acquired: 1 wrist brace (needed for my injured wrists) 1 wood santa decoration 3 microwave plates for future mosaicking (when hands heal)
almost acquired, but put back: 1 cd travel case book (i already have plenty)
outgoing: 2 bathing suits (consigned) 1 bathing suit (tossed)

going to try doing this again to see what i acquire and if i can slow it down and purge more than acquire. it's hard to be this exposed and show you all my hoarding dis-ease. despite the shame, i'm going to be honest with myself and somebody else and try not to "selectively forget" all that i hoard each week.
i re read this thread and agree that groceries don't need logging as they are essential; only take out meals and their containers.
week from august28 through sept. 3
acquired: ~ garage sale on 29th: one halloween door decoration, very cool skeleton. 5 display stands 2 retro tall vases or candlestick holders 7 christmas ornaments ~ online shopping yesterday - box of 10 picture frames, the kind i use.; incredible sale! also ordered bulk picture wire and a portfolio that zips, to protect my artwork in progress. this may be a rationalization, but i made a pact with myself that whenever i sold any art, i would reinvest some money into some art supplies to further me along in making and selling art. but NO MORE PAINTS or paper until i use what i have! ~ 1 shirt , 1 pr. of pant, and 1 scrubs top, given by a friend - they both fit and i have few clothes that fit anymore. the scrubs i can use in the studio or at home for art or messy projects.
turned down: 2 huge boxes of free broken plates and mosaic shards, sight unseen! i'm out of room for more. whoo hoo! this is huge for me!
purged: 4 old clothing items old food out of fridge 6 magazines three scrap pieces of fabric that were moldy, acquired in a yard sale and that i didn't feel like washing. about 100 papers
much more came in than out. i see "art potential" in everything, even trash; it's a blessing and a curse.

I plan to post all non-discretionary spending and acquisitions. Basic food and basic needs like toilet paper and laundry detergent will not be listed unless I am buying multiple packs, which is not usually a problem for me. week of september 3 to september 9.Saturday, I bought on ebay: One used telephoto camera lens for DD's camera. She wants to be a photographer for the college newspaper or yearbook, and her auto-focus lens has not been working well. It doesn't turn easily, and gets stuck when she's trying to get her shots. I also bought a memory card for her camera. I bid on 3! Thankfully I was outbid on the other 2. This was all very compulsive of me. In fact DD was asking me to wait until she decided which lens she wanted, but there was only ONE of these lenses available, and time was running out! Drama, excitement, I know, I'm nuts! Sunday: Some fresh produce that I will use. Went to the movies. Didn't bring anything home, but movie tickets. Update: We went to a small discount grocery store that was next to the movie theater. We did not purchase anything but food that we will eat and toilet paper, so I thought I had nothing to post, but when I walked into the kitchen today, (Monday) I saw it. The store doesn't have bags, so our stuff was all packed in a box. I saw the empty box stacked there on a pile of boxes/junk. I do use boxes to put my junk mail for recycling in and do have a full box ready to go out, but have decided that if I keep this box, even as a recycling container, I must purge at least 3 other boxes. It's been raining on and off, so it may be a good day today have another box bonfire like I did last weekend. Tuesday: It started raining harder, so I never had my box bonfire yesterday. Maybe after work one day this week or possibly on Saturday. Today I did some grocery shopping, all groceries have been put away and bags discarded. Mail.... I brought it in at the same time as the groceries and set it aside while I prepared dinnerand put groceries away. I will deal with it NOW before bedtime. Wednesday: Stopped at the store on my way home, and bought a new litter box. Kitten has gotten too big for the 'petite' litter box I bought when he was 3 weeks old! I don't know why I didn't just use an old ratty dishpan for the original litter box. I'm pretty sure I have a few around that would have worked. Now to decide what to do with 'petite' litter box. I also bought a scratch box for him. These are both things I needed. The mail I brought in still needs to be dealt with. But I will get to it. I promise! Thursday... Nada except 2 bags of trash out. Friday: Found out I will be getting a bonus, and cost of living increase. Shopped for a new cell phone and new computer. My old desktop has not been functioning correctly and is... old. I need to think of replacing it. I looked at 2 stores, didn't buy anything yet but think I know what I want. I did buy a new tracfone to replace the one that DD dropped and let sit in the driveway on a rainy night. I will recycle the old phones, hers too, once the new one is activated with my old number. Saturday: Went back to one store, bought computer only, no monitor, no extra services, nada.

oh yeah.... drama, excitement, the "thrill of the hunt!" good to have you here, w8ting! WTG with putting all the grocery bags away (a thing i have a hard time remembering to do) and your box decisions; oh, how i relate. am setting up this week. not yet sure if i'll do individual days and keep modifying, or just a list like last week. just a list, i think. week of september 4 to september 10acquired:sunday: nothing acquired! (yet) monday: ~one perfectly gooddouble notebook covered binder. can use this to file documents on wetlands and cases and permit apps. i'm following in the county regarding wetland disturbance. (rationalization runs deep!) ~one very serviceable japanese hook area rug in pastel yellow, blue, and lt. red; it's now in the bedroom and tarzan loves it and it feels good to walk on when i get out of bed. plus, it partially hides the ugly industrial wall to wall carpeting partially and brightens the room. still deciding whether to keep it, as it doesn't really match anything i have and i don't always remove shoes when i've been gardening so am afraid to get it dirty. both of these things came from beside our dumpster. tuesday: ~ copies of some documents related to wetlands. 32 pgs in all. turned down:released: sun. - nothing mon. - one pair of shorts and some fabric scraps into the dumpster tue. - nothing
