Arid, you've got to cut it off at the source. Ruthless. Show no mercy.

I've been working through my old magazine hoard very slowly but steadily all week. This is going to be a long-term task, but quite enjoyable. However, the progress I make there inevitably means that I'm neglecting something else. There's always something else, it seems.
So as of today, I'm divvying up my time by also adding some daily digital decluttering in order to catch up on all the research email digests that have piled up for weeks unread.
In some ways, digital clutter is even more insidious than tangible paper... easier to ignore. But digital is also just as complicated as paper... fraught with emotions, especially guilt and regret, and a thousand procrastinated decisions and actions.

I agree with you on digital clutter papermoon, I have been trying to clean out some of my email inbox clutter regularly too. I have just completed a letter and a form I needed to do and filed the paperwork. It is really strange now when I open my filing cabinet, there is so little in it now! I also realised that one of the other ways I procrastinate with paperwork where I need to send a cover letter is to put it off because of my perfectionism. I feel I need to write it on the computer and print it off so it just seems too much trouble. This morning I was telling myself the same old story and then I thought just do it 'imperfectly' - so I grabbed a piece of paper and just wrote it out longhand. It took much less time and now it's done. so lesson learned, Just do it - 'good enough' is OK! I am adding to the tax stuff I need for this year and I've also started a file for next years tax so I'm prepared instead of this annual drama about trying to find paperwork.

Haven't been exactly "daily"... but here's my update since last posting on Aug. 16th. Aug. 17th -- 17 min. spent working on 2013 Taxes & filed 1 paper. Also, 15 minutes spent decluttering some papers from Dining Room Table -- 4 "to be shred", 3 into Office in a Bag, 1 put on DS's bed, 1 coupon put where I keep them 11 papers into recycle bag Aug. 18th -- 30 min. doing paperwork. Deposited Dd's paycheck (stipend) for her. It was sent to the home address rather than her college address. Aarrgghh. Also, 20 minutes doing Donation Paperwork. Aug. 19th -- 10 min. workiing on bills. 21 papers into recycle bag. Aug. 20th -- Paid a couple bills. Also, 20 minutes decluttering some papers from Dining Room Table. 64 papers into recycle bag. Aug. 21st -- Went thru a bunch of papers from Dining Room Table - 2 "to be shred", 1 tossed, 2 pkgs. of papers are now ready to send to DS, worked on auto insurance issues, 56 papers into recycle bag. Arid frankly junk mail is terrifying. I get at least 3-5 a day and have resolved to read mail daily after I found a check in the mail from mortgage company that was a pile for a month.I shredded 9 pieces of mail today and tossed all the flyers.

I recycled two notebooks of homework exercises from my Italian class. No need to keep them after the class ended, as all the info is in the textbook.

Frustrated because paperwork is frustrating but stuck with it for 2 hours. Tomorrow I am moving shredder if there is space. I piled all of the unorganized papers in my bedroom and while I have made a sizable dent I still have quite a bit but did clear fireplace which is next to my desk in living room. There are now no papers that don't belong in the living room. I sorted it all because by using my bedroom as a staging area I don't want to take too long being out of maintenance. I am finding a lot of monthly statements I already paid. I am getting bedroom in order over 7 days as the goal. Since other son in school a lot of time will free up.

I also am going thru kids papers too. I feel for the trees dying in the name of literacy.

"Thank you for picking up my slack when I dropped the ball; I apologize for being so out of it..." "Thanks for all of your care and concern; I apologize for all my flaws..." "Thank you for not leaving me; I apologize for messing up your life..." ...

Haven't moved shredder but managed to fill shredder completely.Tossed some more papers without personal info to recycling. Filled out papers and have a deadline to find certain papers so working under the gun. Got some consolidated into a smaller space too. Down to three file boxes and a pile by bed and a basket for whole house....progress.

I am afraid in the night my paperwork will get up and attack me. . Shredded some more and though not paperwork tossed used school workbooks of daughter's while she is gone. Have 6 hours without her so will toss some more of her junk. Paperwork is multiplying every time I turn my back.

Lostchild, I'm convinced the paper breeds in the dark ! I shredded another small bag of papers today - I think I will bring the shredder from work home for the weekend.

The shredding is going along nicely, I can only do about five minutes before it needs a rest so I am doing that between other chores and will keep that up over the weekend. OK, the next paperwork job that I can no longer procrastinate on is my tax. I told DH just to go ahead and make an appointment with the accountant because it gives me a deadline. He's made the appointment for a this week so I can't procrastinate any more. I've made a start but I'm simply avoiding it now so I'm going to do a checklist so it doesn't feel so big: copy group certificates list all work expenses collect receipts for all work expenses collect bank account statements list all investment expenses list all interest collect receipts for all investment expenses - two missing make up a file for current tax year and file originals jump for joy that it is done!
