I realized something. It's not only the information. It's the paper and the printing. I have many years in the commercial printing trade. I love the look and the smell of quality press printed publications. Reading online and yes, even holding a Kindle does not give me the physical feedback and pleasure that books and magazines do. So for me, it's a double whammy.

Good for you, Serendipity! I need this thread too. For now I'm reading through and making plans on how to conquer my paper anxiety/clutter. I do have a box where I toss any obvious junk mail that comes in, and that has helped.

I've looked through at least thousand pictures today looking for 2. It took 4 hours to find them and in the process I found several to give away. I took a handful to a lady tonight that lives not too far away. They were pictures of her grandfather, his parents and grandparents, aunts & uncles. She was so happy.
I have another handful to give to a first cousin and a few more to another acquaintance. My parents are gone and my dd does not even know these people. There is no sense in me keeping all these pictures. I have my grandmother's pictures, my parent's pictures, my aunt's pictures, the historical society's pictures, my pictures, dd's pictures of dgd and it's getting to be too much. I could scrapbook the rest of my life and not be done. I have boxes and tubs and albums full of pictures! Yeek!!!

Hi all, I have been blogging about my paper clutter project, which I started a little over two weeks ago. I've gotten rid of quite a lot of papers and that feels good. It's been tedious and exhausting to look at and make a decision about each piece of paper, but I think I have dealt with approximately 70-75% of my paper clutter. However, when I look at the box of papers I designated as keepers so far, I think it's too much and I feel disheartened. After I finish the first pass of the rest of my paper clutter that I haven't dealt with yet, I will definitely do at least one more round of whittling down all the keeper papers. So, I have a question. What do you keep? Or, rather, how do you determine what to keep? Does anyone know of a good, comprehensive online source with guidelines on what kinds of documents to keep - and for how long? If so, please share! Thanks.

Yesterday I took several pieces of paper to their owners and today plans are to take a large stack of historical society papers to the archives. I will be soooo glad to get this out of my house.

Thanks, CLSS! Both of the links you provided will be incredibly helpful as I continue working on my purge of papers.

Several years ago I had 3 six foot high stacks of magazines. I got rid of them all except a few favorites and I've bought a few since then that I kept. Today when I moved bookcases around, I went through again and pulled out a few more to get rid of. I need to cut what I have down by at least half or two thirds and it is so hard. I do get them out every winter, so it's not like I put them away and never read them. The same thing with a small stack of paperbacks. I'm also struggling with personal genealogy papers. It's all in the computer (I think) and there is really not much that needs to be saved but that doesn't make it any easier to throw away almost 30 years of research. I feel that I am at a crossroads and this is the time for me to do some major purging. My tastes have changed and things I grabbed onto when my parents died don't mean as much.
