irisbloom, I hope you enjoy those books. I have one on Buddhism by Jack Kerouac. I should put it on my reading pile. Okay, I brought home yarn. Yes, yes, I did. It was a trade, a day shop sitting at the local yarn store and I could get a check or store credit. I chose credit and brought home some yarn that makes me crazy happy. I have the pattern for it and will consider it my birthday present to myself. I have plenty of yarn to use up but it is silly to force myself to use yarn that I'm not excited about anymore. I am going through my yarn stash and will be giving away quite a bit of it.

I got some early birthday presents: a mug with "Never mess with a librarian" I wanted from my sister and BIL and a set of knives and steak cutlery from my parents.

Most of my purchases have been necessities - feed for the critters, etc. Yesterday I bought paper targets, hearing protectors, and safety glasses for DGS to take to the 4-H Shooting Sports Day. DGS has his own kit, but it was in the trunk of his car, which DD drove across the state to work for the weekend, so all his Shooting Sports stuff is 150 miles away. DGS probably could have borrowed the targets and glasses, but it's a nuisance to have to share your gear with someone else at these events, and I don't like him sharing the safety glasses. Rather than have him impose on someone else, and share glasses, I just bought him cheap replacements. Of non-necessities, I have bought: 1.) One kit of gel-type nail polish that does not require the special light. I applied it today. If it half-way stays on as it claims, I'm tossing my collection of regular polish. 3.) One floral knit shirt for me. I probably did not need this, but my house is such a mess I can't find any of my clothes, and it's summertime in the south. I have to have fresh, clean clothes available, and I can only find 3 shirts suitable to wear in public. 4.) One lipstick in my signature color. They've been out for months, and I had actually considered ordering it off the internet, but didn't. 5.) One face powder. I have a perfectly good one somewhere, but can't find it. I believe this is all the non-necessities I have purchased since my last post. I'm pretty impressed with myself.

Dayeanu, I feel for you. Don't feel bad, I will feel bad for you! So, I've lost my RICE COOKER. How do you lose a rice cooker? I know its around somewhere... Also, I've lsot my new bank card. its one of those pay pass ones that just beep with one touch, no PIN number required! I didn't want it! I didn't ask for it! I decided never to carry it with me, and so I took it out of my wallet in the house and put it somewhere.... but not any of the 3 places I keep important documents. I ripped things apart looking for it but never did. Now I'm putting it all away and still no luck. I did find my sun hat that has been lost for several weeks, 9 pieces of cutlery, several tweezers, nail clippers, sewing needles (I never have one when I want one). I will have to acquire a new bank card tomorrow. not a purchase, but a bloody pain. I suppose there is a tiny chance it got stolen out of my front hall ( I never lock the door, but the building is locked and no one can enter if baddog is home). There is the tinyest chance someone stole it when I was walking her??? unlikely but I feel worried.

Oh Puppybox, I HATE it when I lose my bank card! Like you,I'm always pretty sure it's around here somewhere. ...but there's always that nagging fear that THIS TIME someone took it. And then the self-hatred talk begins. The "why am I this way" talk. As for the rice cooker, I lost mine once. For long enough that I bought a second one I hope you find yours soon.

This, just an observation about acquisitions.
Remember several posts back when I looked at that purse in the store and talked myself out of it?
Then I found an even better one that I already owned, at my old house.
I still have not transferred my stuff over to it.
Yep, I'm still using the slightly ratty, torn one.

Because the ratty old purse is maybe still usable, just not socially acceptable maybe? because it's the thrill of the acquiring new that you really wanted, just using a new purse isn't the delightful part? maybe you would have bought the new one and not transferred your stuff over either because really you are just low energy or depressed or something?

Because what are you going to say to people if they say 'new purse'? and you can't lie and say I found it at my old hoarded house?

Because what are you going to say to people if they say 'new purse'? and you can't lie and say I found it at my old hoarded house? Well, you can just say "No, it is and old one I have had for ages, I just have not been using it" There will be a right time to change it, dayeanu

I think you've nailed it here. It's most likely the thrill of acquiring something new ...... because I am low energy or depressed or something..........and acquiring something new gives a momentary lift to my spirits. In a way, acquiring something new, like a purse or a nail polish, is a way of giving myself a little reward or treat. It's a way of saying to myself that I am worth it, that I deserve a little something nice in my life. And it's easier to buy something than it is to clean up my house "because I deserve something nice." It's that quick gratification. I've been thinking about this. In my 20-box desqualoring project (trash, give away, and 18 different categories of keep), one of my boxes is labeled "New Purchases." This is for the things I buy because I think I really need them. I put these new purchases in the large plastic tub so I can find them when I need them. (This is primarily new purchases before I joined the acquisitions thread.) I've been stunned to see that the tub is now filled and overflowing into another "New Purchases" tub, and rarely do I find that I need anything out of those tubs "just yet." At the time I purchased these things, they seemed like an imminent *need*. I guess they are not-so-much. I'm hoping that some of this lack of need is attributable to my low level of activity, and that as I get up and start doing things, I will need more or most of the stuff. But IDK. I really wonder. I'm glad I'm here, examining each new acquisition.

Wow Daye, what are the things in the "new" boxes? This is a curious thing indeed...how to know what really really is an immediate need. Hmm, I wonder what I would discover if I did this.
I'm thinking for myself. I have a new mascara and eye shadow bought about a month ago in order to throw out the old ones in a timely, healthy way. Haven't opened them yet.
Bought a book, looked like fun, haven't opened it yet. Birthday yarn in bag with pattern yet. To my credit on that I have another project on the needles being worked right now.
At one point when I was carefully auditing my purchasing, I found on my receipts a ton of stuff that I could have done without. And most with no noticeable negative affect or sense of denial! Everything from groceries to personal care items.
And that wasn't even getting into hard core frugality which could shave off a whole additional layer of purchases.
Just as an example and this is really personal but I'm sick of buying pads. I have found patterns online to make them out of fleece and flannel. Also, some folks have gone to cloth for toilet purposes.

Acquisitions at Goodwill: ORGANIC cotton t-shirt, green, score! Aqua blue microfiber turtleneck sweater, Gap brand, super soft and squishy. New with tags cream and lime green checked shirt. Wore it right away. At Freddie's: A coral t shirt on deep end of season discount. Hard to believe but I have worn most of my t shirts to threads. And...boots. Really comfortable, cute, man made materials, on sale. I've been wanting a pair for two years and couldn't afford what we have at the clothing store where I've worked (a couple hundred dollars!). These were $40. Now to release some unworn shoes and more clothing.
