oh ladies...it was bad....the rummage sale was bad........not as bad as years past.... I will duck in and check in over lunch.
***************LUNCH BREAK************************************
OK - it was bad and I knew it would be bad. Not money wise...but.......
I bought a box full of stuff. Only one dressy jacket/blazer and one pair of capri's (I really needed the capri's). My daughter bought a few clothing items - a sweatshirt, a pair of shorts and a cute knit hat in neon yellow. We are going to take red thread and make it look like a softball. I bought two brand new games for youth group (there was a third game that I wish I had grabbed). I only bought three books - one jambalaya cookbook, a book to read on the bus and a book of Steven Foster's music. I bought a large plastic plate to use for serving for when we cook outside on the grill - which is all the time in the summer. I bought a watch, which I really need. My daughter got a backgammon set which we like to play when we are sitting around the table outside. I bought a reel lawn mower (the manual kind) so that I can mow the lawn. I also bought some needles and thread as I have no idea where my sewing kit is. I did not need the beutiful vintage small china platter from England, nor did I need the neutral pumpkin plate nor did I need the stained glass pumpkin for Halloween. I can justify the small corel dish with the lid as I am trying to use glass/ceramic and not plastic to cook or store food in. I cannot justify the vintage pearl necklace.
My daughter got two bags for the bag sale and bought TONS of toys and coloring books and VHS movies for the day care where she works.
UGH>>>>> I knew better........My God is a forgiving God but my husband....not so much so..........

ohblondie, well it all mostly sounds pretty useable. I'm sorry you have a worry about your husband's reaction though. Would it help if there are things you can take out of the house in exchange for the new things? cleanbee, those boots sound FAB! I'm glad you found a treasure that you will enjoy having and looking at even when you aren't wearing them. ____________ Update on my acquisitions: The newest lace piece is washed, dried, and draped over my bedroom lamp shade. It is the perfect size for the purpose and really looks lovely. When the light is on, I can see all the embroidery very clearly, the edge hangs about 2 inches below the edge of the lamp shade and is lovely. The two t-shirts are washed and folded in the drawer with other later summer short sleeve t-shirts. The pillow case is washed, the pillow is on the front porch airing. It has a bit of smell, nothing strange, just, you know, the smell of another person. I might actually wash it in the bathtub. Otherwise, still working on the sari silk yarn crochet spiral scarf. I've finally got both a pattern and a stitch that I like so onwards with that project. Poor yarn, it really got raveled more times that it could take. The scarf fabric is just sitting in the craft project queue. Will be next up as a project I think, unless I get distracted by something else. Haven't bought the fabric online that matches the big floral in the sitting room. Just going slow with it all and thinking as I go.

angela..I am trying to be kind and considerate of him. I am agreeing to many of his suggestions around the yard and stuff. I agreed to eliminate the flower boxes on the deck railing. They were my fave but he never liked them. It is all about teamwork - I know that. I just at times never feel like we are on the same team. I LOVE the lace Angela. what you did with it - draping it over the lamp shade - sounds pretty. I am anxious to see how the scarf turns out. And we did use the larger plastic serving plate last night. I cooked out and put the chicken on the plate as I took it off the grill. I had started sorting the bags of stuff my daughter grabbed for her day care. I took all of the movies and put them in a box, all of the matchbox cars and smaller toys and put them in a box, etc. Last night she went thru the movies and grabbed the ones she wanted and put the day care ones in a box. SHe turned and asked me where I wnted the movies to go. I said "your room" she said she got them for the family. I told her I don;t have a VHS player, the only one is in her room. Boy I hope the movies ended up in her room! THey had FOUR sets of beautiful china from England at the rummage sale. THey were beautiful. THey were all from the 1920's or 30's. It took all morning for them to sell - and one never sold. I guess there is not much call for beautiful china any more. I am slowly working my items into the house and finding them a home. I am suffering the rummage sale "regrets" now. I regret not taking that to donate. I regret not taking that to donate. etc....

cleanbee please post pics of the boots! ohblondie, I'm so glad I wasn't at that sale. I just hate to see homeless antique china! I bought 3 pairs of cheap men's work jeans. They are "relaxed fit" and boot cut, so plenty of room to move. The fabric is about 3 times heavier than typical women's jeans, and the pockets are deep enough to actually use.

Glad you got those jeans dayeanu. For barn work, it is so important to have good work clothes. Sounds like you have a good find there. I have to say, it is really working for me to check back in about my acquisitions. It is closing the loop for me, being accountable and thoughtful about what I bring home. The goal for me has been to ONLY buy things I have an immediate use for..and are essential in that I don't have any thing that will do for the task. I don't want to bring in things that are just parsing details, like getting a little shop-vac when I already have a small handheld vacuum that will do the job. And for the crafty stuff, I want to make sure I am not getting too far ahead of myself with putting projects in the queue. And really, I have so many materials already, ideally I would using those materials in projects. I can switch back to doing that after I get these scarf projects done. I had gone to all that work to put together project packets of yarn and patterns so I would have a project ready at hand. It would be good to get back to that.

I don't want to bring in things that are just parsing details, like getting a little shop-vac when I already have a small handheld vacuum that will do the job. Thanks, Angela. The fact is that the old worn-oworn out pants I had delegated to barn work are now actually wearing out. Seams are ripping out, and too tattered and threadbare to patch, so it was time. I tried on some women's jeans, thinking maybe I'd try to be a little more feminine, but the difference in the weight and sturdiness of the material was drastic. And the pocket depth - the front pockets of the ladies jeans were smaller than my cell phone. On the men's jeans, I could pack a sack lunch in one pocket! That's a big deal to me, because I've always got some tool or rope or flashlight or something I need to have a pocket for. I'm doing like you - trying to buy only what's currently needed. I think this thread makes me a little more aware.

dayeanu, me too on the jeans. I literally wore them to tatters! I think it's mostly the moving of hay bales, they rest against the front of my thighs and those hard rough fibers really wear on the pants fabric. It's why there are hay-bucking aprons. I have 4 pairs of barn pants right now. I have a really good pair of Carhart jeans, that good thick fabric but I think I will re-donate them. They are stiff around my legs and waist and so much of what I do with the animals involves bending over, when I trim their hooves or shear them. I need pants that don't bind anywhere. _____________ A bit more clothing acquisitions on Wednesday. Stopped at the cheaper thrift store, planning on not finding much as their stock is not as good but voila, found a pair of charcoal black pants that are sort of a cross between jeans and slacks. Good high waist, stretch, wider leg..good enough condition. And cheap. VV was having a 30% club card sale so wandered in to look at more pants. I was really hoping to find some gray summer slacks, no luck. Also no luck on barn jeans. Did find a very nice, all cotton, golden yellow long-sleeved v-neck t-shirt. I am always looking for all cotton for outside work since I find that even a small hint of rayon or spandex makes things uncomfortable when I sweat. A really nice brown lace cardigan, wrap style, shawl collar. All cotton. Great for summer. I always feel slightly undone when I don't have a cardigan or a jacket or some second topper to an outfit. This cardigan goes exactly with the long brown t-shirt and will really make for a complete outfit. A cream-colored leather belt, very needed. And a very soft flesh/peach rayon pashmina-style scarf, light weave. It had a snag so I got it for 50% off marked price then the other 30% for the club card. Okay, I need to stop shopping now. I have plenty of appropriate clothes to wear that fit, I can really even do without gray slacks. So, cold turkey on the thrifts for a while. I have enough.

"On the men's jeans, I could pack a sack lunch in one pocket!" dayeanu! Thanks for the chuckle! I like decent pockets, too. I don't use a purse, so everything goes in my pants pockets, or in my car. If I can't carry it in my pockets, I don't need it.

I acquired some clothes too, for free from someone. A nice spring coat, cotton shirt and a t-shirt.

I did not mention I brought home some more things yesterday from a visit at my parents: A glass pencil holder my mum unearthed at home - it used to stand on my desk when I was young, it is beautifull and I want to keep it. Mum also gave me a set of coffee cups I have always loved and used when visited, but they do not fit into her new coffee maker and she needed a space for right sized cups. Their decor is very close to the one on my plates. I already have a different set of tea cups, but I just could not say no. My mum got so much better in letting things go during the last few years, I am very proud of her. Now I realised that my dad has become a serious hoarder of some things and is not willing to throw anything out - he is sure he would need it the minute he would let it go. He refuses the concept of amnesty as wastefull, he would share stuff with anyone who needs it though. The problem is he believes that a perfect organisation solves everything and wants me to organise his very full barn.

Going OTD - LOTS of flower pots - could be hanging or tabletop. Two paots with tall tops that I had when I tried to grow tomatos. four long rectangular pots that we had nailed to the deck railing. a dozen or so black wrought iron tiki torches that we attached to the deck railing. Several lengths of white icicle lights that were woven in the spindles of the deck railing - though they might come back if we dont get rope lighting.
Coming IN: lots of flowers and vegetable plants. Lots of happiness and serentity when I sit on the deck.
now to finish attacking the inside of the house.....

lucie good for getting the clothes, pencil holder and cups! And that your mother is better at letting things go. I am afraid I can strongly identify with your dad. I tend to think if it is sorted and organized, it would somehow all fit........and be useful! I had a bad Friday. Friday afternoon I just knew my D and DGS were driving 100 miles to see my ex. but no one would say it. (Turned out I was right.) I KNEW I was. (It's a very long and ugly story.) I took myself out to lunch after they left (Dum-de-dum-dum) and went shopping. I ordered a small carved turquoise turtle necklace off of eBay while I had lunch. I kept thinking about ohblondie's post about the yard sale. "oh ladies...it was bad.."......but it could have been worse. (I did not order six other things I saw on eBay that I really liked.) After lunch I bought 7 shirts and 3 pairs of capris at the store. (I justified this because all the little knit shirt types I had bought a few months ago are form fitting (thanks, Spandex!) and synthetic/cotton blend. The shirts are fine under a little jacket for church, or on days when my stomach is flatter. Other days, like Friday, I'm embarrassed to be seen in them. I now understand the term spare tire.) (I reasoned that these new shirts are 100% cotton and button down the front so will be cooler during the hot summer, and will hang more loosely. And they were inexpensive. I reasoned that the capris were inexpensive and would be cooler, too. I don't wear shorts.) I bought 4 small pots of flowers. I bought a metal solar-powered light-up butterfly for the deck I don't have. I bought two pairs of nice garden clogs. I bought Mother's Day flowers and a big pre-planted solar-lit planter, to take to an older lady acquaintance who has leukemia, and whose 50 year old son and daughter-in-law treat her about as nicely as mine does me. I left them on her front porch Saturday night as a surprise for her to find Sunday morning. I know her son and DIL well, but don't know her well, and a visit would have been awkward. Then I took myself out for Chinese. And my fortune cookie said that when I help someone else, it helps me. Yesterday, I learned that the lady will have to go to the hospital for a treatment tomorrow, and that it is really hard on her and makes her very sick. She can't walk for days afterward. I was glad I had shopped for her.

"...a small carved turquoise turtle necklace..." Nice symbolism, Daye! www.whats-your-sign.com/animal-symbolism-turtle.htmlI'm glad you bought yourself some nice useful gifts and went out to eat. And that was very thoughtful of you to bring a gift to the lady who is ill.
