angela..that Paris print sounds delightful. My older DD loves things like that. I agree - that turtlenck sounds divine! papermoon..I just LOVE Bullwinkle. that was a great little clip. I need to watch more of him....... I got paid yesterday and I plan that my spending this week will be an oil change, an inspection and a tuneup. I hate having to be adult sometimes.....

ohblondie, I'm due for an oil change too. DH says he'll do it. IDK. When he used to do it he wouldn't ever take the oil to the recycling place, and it would end up getting rain water and lots of yard debris in it. It was always such a mess. Then he'd finally have a large tub filled with several gallons, and it would tip in the car on the way to the recycling center. I told him that I'd rather take it somewhere than have to deal with that mess.

Today I was offered a Red Cross bag of emergency/disaster-preparedness stuff, and I gladly accepted it. I just arrived home and I will open the bag now and itemize the contents....
- mini 42-page First Aid Guide from A to S (Airway obstruction to Stroke; alas, there's no entry for Z/Zika) - ditto (I'll donate this duplicate guide to the front desk) - mini first aid kit, with bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic cream - mini flat flashlight (surprisingly powerful) - mini whistle (surprisingly ear-splitting) - hooded rain poncho (weight 2 oz) - filtering face mask - survival blanket (84x52 inches, weight 1.75 oz) - bag of drinking water, approved by the US Coast Guard (4 oz) with the warning: "Drink no water first 24 hours unless sick or injured, or in desert conditions. Thereafter, 8 oz per day minimum."
And the most intriguing item of all....
- vacuum pack of 6 bars of "Emergency Ration" (ingredients: wheat flour, vegetable shortening, cane sugar, water, coconut, salt)
Plus a handwritten note from the Red Cross packer of these items: "Be safe! Robert"
I think I'll also donate the vacu-pak of ration bars to the lobby. Or I could use it as a doorstop... it's about the size and heft of a brick.

How about using the ear splitting whistle when your neighbor turns up the volume sky high?!
Nice gift. I used to be a Red Cross disaster volunteer.

I received my income tax refund yesterday. I WILL NOT go to the antique mall or the thrift store, I WILL NOT, I WILL NOT! Fertilize in March for hay fields will be at least $1,000, truck insurance in April and I'm afraid to price new flooring. I have plenty of things to do (like housework and plenty of sewing to keep me busy if I get in the mood. I'm trying so hard to only buy necessities like groceries and gas and pay bills and get my dental work done.

I had forgotten two more things that I got last week. One, a bag of undyed silk top. This is a yarn spinning fiber preparation. I can dye the silk to add to the spinning fiber batts that I make. It was a good deal for the quantity and of use to me. Two, a bag of bowl filler in the colors to match the new fabric I got to redo my couch bolster for spring.

Angela, in a way I'm envious of the thrift stores in your area and in a way I'm thankful that the stores in my area are not as good as yours.

I had a $5.00 coupon at the Hardware store, and I needed a scrub brush for the siding. The coupon expired tomorrow, so I was in town and stopped to look. The brush head was $8.49 minus $5.00. I have a handle at home that will screw in.

Purchases over the past few days: Chicken feed, moth traps... I saw a pantry moth flying around the other day. I hate those things! Food and fuel I ordered a used textbook for the class I will be starting next week. (I decided to buy rather than rent, because I plan to use this book for more than one semester.) ETA: I bought a pack of 8 toothbrushes at Sam's club. DH was asking me for a toothbrush a couple of days ago, and we don't have any new ones. (Yes I use toothbrushes for scrubbing out small spaces sometimes.

I think I will join you here on this thread. I will include all spending, not just things. So today:
$5.48 for a cup of coffee and a muffin at one of my favourite coffee shops.

Yet again I fell under the spell of the library bookshop. Found an absolutely perfect copy of "The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins, clothbound in deep blue with embossed decoration and a blue silk bookmark ribbon. This is another of the titles in the gorgeously produced Penguin Classics series. I paid only $8... it's $100 on Amazon!!

Wow, papermoon, that book looks great. I would have bought it too. I love well made covers. I have replaced my tea sieve - my coleague gave me one in return for a set of tea cups I gave her. Swaps are great.

UGH - I had a dr's appointment and went to the hospital thrift shop as a reward. I bught a pedastal candy dish with a lid in milk china and a piece of Roseville (?) pottery with the number stamp on the bottom. I need to look on line to see if there is any value assigned to that piece.
a week or so ago my daughter bought a dress for $7 that was listed online for $90.
I need to make sure future dr's appointments are scheduled for early morning when the shop is closed.......the doctor's wives donate pretty china and crystal.....
