50 books to get rid of! Diane, that's GREAT! Do you have to be 'in the mood' to get rid of books? Are there some days when you just can't? I have days where I can clean or pull weeds, but sorting and making decisions to get rid of stuff is impossible.

Sue, I definitely have to be in the mood, and I even noticed tonight that in the first boxes I looked into I found more to get rid of than the later boxes--so as the evening wore on my ability to let things go waned.
But some of it is the passage of time, and constantly reminding myself of what I'm trying to do. I don't want the books to grow out of where they're stored now, so if I want to prevent them creeping beyond their allowed box space, I MUST find some that are less appealing than the new ones I want to put in there. It really is working, that, plus the "am I willing to read this book right now" question. 5 years ago I would have said this was impossible.
Of course, now I have to actually GET RID of the 50 books. Many will go to the little libraries, and that happens one and two books at a time. Once I decide to get rid of them, I very rarely do a take-back, though.
Unfortunately, I think I pulled some muscles lifting boxes up and down...
I'm done with book work for the night, of course, I left a mess, but I'll have to deal with it tomorrow. I'm going to start getting ready for bed now. Litter pans, etc....

Yup, Diane, I know what you mean by 'the passage of time.' A couple of years ago, I wanted to keep certain things... but now I can let go of them. OH! We have a little free library in town. I noticed it a few weeks ago. It's in someone's front yard across town. I may go check it out one of these days. One day I'm going to build my own little free library. edit- I hope your pulled muscles are better tomorrow morning!

I even noticed tonight that in the first boxes I looked into I found more to get rid of than the later boxes--so as the evening wore on my ability to let things go waned. Diane, this is normal. One of my daughters got her degree in psychology and I remember her telling us that decision-making takes effort, and our ability to make good decisions throughout the day actually starts to wear out, much like a lot of physical activity tires us until we need a break to rest our muscles.

chocolatetruffle, the tag says Wilendur. The tag is frayed on the bottom. The tablecloth itself is very clean and in excellent condition... but I think someone altered it. It's hemmed on 3 sides, not only 2. And it measures 38" by 42". It JUST fits my table. Oh well. I still love it! Yes, it was definitely altered. A vintage tablecloth should have two hemmed edges and two selvage. The original was probably at least 42" square, and probably a bit larger than that. I'm so glad it fits your table. It's a pretty one!

decision-making takes effort,
Yep--I was looking at each book, asking myself if I was really going to read it, and trying to think about the other books I had and which would be more valuable to read--after a while I would look at a book, start that mental process and I could just feel my mind start to back away and say "no, I can't do this, I'll just keep this one, then I won't have to think about it!"
Going through the logic required to make myself really understand that I don't need something is a lot of work.

I enjoyed reading about everybody's day. sue5000 Chocolate syrup and a tablecloth with ducks! And a birthday card with the present of your choice! Sounds like a great day! Happy Birthday! dtesposito Actually you ran 2 errands then took a break. I always want a break after errands. If your pattern is task - break - task and you feel you should do more, I would first say it would depend on the task. You could say to yourself, well if I do 2 tasks then a piece of dark chocolate (small) and a break you might be able to make a new pattern. I recently read that a reward for doing what you want to be a habit, even if its a small piece of chocolate then your mind associates the task with pleasure. So tonight after I took a shower, I had one piece of a chocolate covered cherry - Dove brand. I bought a small bag. I also get will get one or a blueberry one for doing each of the things I want to simply "do". I very much appreciate the info about putting a sign where things live, until you learn their new "address" That is an excellent idea. thedreadedknock Good to see you! I have the same problem. I am stalled because I don't know how to find homes for things. I guess maybe I am afraid that if I give them a home, it might not be a good home. Maybe I am a perfectionist. This coming from a person with chickens who live in her garage, because she doesn't have a coop. I DO NOT want to see what the garage door looks like. I hope your kids have a super time with their grandparents and you get a nice break too and time to get a lot more done without the usual demands on your time. chocolatetruffle Wow that's a lot done! Great job on keeping up with the squash bugs. I had a rather slow day too. I did go to the gym and met with my personal trainer. I wrote V. I stopped to the grocery store and got home right before the rain. We may have a tropical storm come near us. I received a letter from E and answered her this evening. I really like to talk to her. M (V's daughter) spent 3 days with her before she started school. I am elated. I wanted this so much. It was only fair, the girl's mother had taken her most of the summer to a remote region of Russia. So E and V didn't get to see the child for about 2 months. So I am really glad that she got to spend some quality time with her lovely granddaughter who starts first grade this year.

sue5000 I want to do a Little Free Library too! Maybe as a homeschool project. We would have to use someone else's place though. Only people that come down our road are usually lost. @vyaspigeon I am a perfectionist too. I keep stumbling into the "Well, if I can't get it to look symmetrical what's the point?"

I'm glad to see that everyone has been getting so much done. Been a tough week for me, with almost nothing other than caring for the critters being done. Slowing pulling out of the funk. See you all over at the weekend thread.

awww calypso, I'm sorry you were in a funk. I'm all too familiar with that, and I don't understand it. One day you're fine and, for some unknown reason, the next day you feel yourself running out of energy and motivation and just want to take a long nap. Pat yourself on the back for critter care. That's very important.

sue5000, oh no, I've created a monster! That is adorable. That one comes up on ebay pretty often, and I bet you could get it for $15-$20, and not $25.

chocolatetruffle! No monster, just a little diversion for a couple days. I won't go searching for tablecloths to buy. If I happen to see one in person that's affordable, I might buy it, but I'd have to love it first. I don't do eBay or buy anything online either. So it would have to be a find at a thrift store or estate sale or garage sale.

"Well, if I can't get it to look symmetrical what's the point?" thedreadedknock, I used to focus a LOT on symmetry, too! That's part of OCD. Then I read where it's actually more pleasing to the eye to NOT have so much symmetry. For example, plant flowers more randomly. In groups of 3 or 5 or 7. And not centered! Most things in life are NOT so balanced visually or perfect. Practice letting go of that concept. I did. It's just too restrictive. Now I'm getting more done. Just an idea for you. I don't know if I'm explaining it well - maybe some of the others can chime in with their ideas on striving for symmetry.
