Hi disheveled . I don't have a cat anymore, but back when I did, I was terrible at changing the litter box. People could smell that ammonia odor down the hall from my apartment and I would hear them comment and complain. Once, I walked out of my bedroom, looked up, and discovered my apartment was full of flies! There were tons of them on the ceiling and flying around in my bathroom. I was appalled. The litter box hadn't been changed in a long while - my poor cat. I immediately took a large (30-gallon, I think) trash bag, double bagged the entire litter box and lid and tied it tightly. I then dumped it someone's garbage can down the block. It was probably around midnight when I did this. I didn't want anyone to know where it came from. The next day, I bought a bunch of fly strips and did battle for the rest of the week. That was an awful experience and freaked me out enough to keep up more frequently with the litter after that, though I was never as diligent as I could have been. I just want you to know that someone else has been there. You really need to get that large bin of old cemented litter out of there as soon as possible. Not only is it inviting flies, but you're breathing that stuff. Double up trash bags and slide the can inside. At least, get that can wrapped up in trash bags and tied tightly to prevent anything going in or out, until you can get rid of it. But then figure out a way to get it out as soon as possible. Do you have a little wheelie cart you can put it on? If you can do this at nighttime, quietly, neighbors are less likely to see you. I often wait until late at night to get rid of large bags of trash and stuff I'm ashamed of. You can do it!

hey, disheveled, how's it going? haven't heard from you in awhile and hope you are ok. i just re-read your intro. could've been me or any one of us saying we suck at doing most things well, and the sadness and hopelessness that comes from thinking that about ourselves. have you sat down with a piece of paper and tried to list something that you do well? (we all have SOMETHING we do well, and SOME strengths - even if it is not housekeeping!) at least this helps you remember that there's a whole person under this shame and self defeat you're feeling. what outfromundah says - many of use the "cover of night" to deal with all those trash can or dumpster trips we're ashamed of. you're in good company! don't stay away just because you feel ashamed; we all feel ashamed when we come in and some of us deal with shame on a daily basis. you can still do one action on your behalf, or your beloved cat's. and then another. as simple as throwing a piece of trash into the trash can... don't let your thoughts about yourself sabotage the reason you came here. trust the part of you that wants to do something about it. hugs
