I live on the US East Coast and my state has an Elder Council that can be contacted and provides resources for Elder Issues. They are strong advocates for the Elderly and the landlord would be under investigation if it were in my state and brought to their attention. I imagine Your state would be more strict. Sent DM with some resources messymimi can the moderators move this thread to one of the private areas - member only.

Celeste can this thread be moved to the more private members only area? Or at least checked to see if it needs to be moved to help new member.

findingmyvoice, do you want to move this conversation to the members only section of the site?

Whatever you think is best Celeste. I am new and haven't had enough experience to decide. I decided to share my story because I needed a place to sort out my thoughts on this problem. I think best on paper.
I also think there may be other people going through similar problems. I know there are others because now I am hearing (or maybe just finally paying attention to) similar stories on the news and at work.
I lurked for awhile and put off posting because I feared the subject might be too upsetting. So I will leave this for wiser people to decide.

Cheering you on from the sideline. Pace yourself this weekend, reward yourself with some hot chocolate during your rest breaks. We will drop to see your progress and give some encouragement

(((findingmyvoice))) hang in there!
panic mode is something that we understand very well! There are lots of threads here about panic cleaning before an inspection, etc.
Feel free to start a thread to focus just on that aspect of all of the tasks you have in front of you. You can even start your own "blog." You can start as many threads as you want to, or join in on other challenges, etc.
the private section (including blogs) of the site keeps things from being seen by a casual search.

If lurkers can be helped by this story, then it's up to findingmyvoice and Celeste to decide where's the best place for this thread; in our regular squalor threads where it can be seen by other sufferers who haven't worked up the nerve to join this list - or in the private section. Either way, you have our full support and we have your back. I hope you will call and get some advocacy with time running out, findingmyvoice. the pressure and sleeplessness and anxiety coupled with unreasonable and probably illegal demands by the landlord need to be called out. An advocacy group or organization will do this FOR you and buy you some time. I am so sorry you are under this kind of pressure in what seems like an impossible situation. It is so good to read that your mom is happy in her new digs and already making friends! You have fulfilled a lot of daughter responsibilities by seeing to her safety and happiness. It's time to put yourself in the #1 spot and give yourself this same loving treatment. I sure wish i lived closer to you; i'd make those calls for you and help you get some legal pushback on that landlady! TML 's suggestions are spot-on. I think you have an ironclad case of elder abuse. It is shocking how a solution for the opiod crisis would be to kick low income elders out of their housing. You're so right; something has to be done. soft gentle hugs your way. I hope you can get some sleep and rest - and please remember what a good friend to your body and your psyche adequate hydration is!

I think lurkers could be helped by this, but it depends solely on your comfort level, findingmyvoice. We will do what YOU want.

There is money in opioids. All around. From those manufacturing and selling to the federal and local grants coming down to fight the epidemic. Sad.....

I am sorry for the long delay in posting updates. It is finished. I turned in the keys to my Mom's apartment on Saturday. Everything is out of the house and it was a very cluttered house!! I cleaned up too and the house looks pretty good. I took lots of pictures in case the Landlord tries to make trouble.
I hired 1-800-GOT-JUNK and it took 3 truckloads and $2000 to clean out a one bedroom apartment. i know it wasn't my responsibility but I feel much happier today now that it is done. There were many times when I thought I would never get the house packed up. I did the impossible and I don't have to worry about lawsuits and other problems in the future. My Mom is doing so well in her new home and she should not be bothered by this issue any more. That peace of mind is priceless.
Thank you everyone for the help and support. I may start a blog. I still have a lot of work ahead of me. I focused on keeping my Mom in her apartment for 4 months and then the huge project of finding her a new home and cleaning out her old one. I found many distressing things and I am emotionally and physically worn out. My house is a mess and my finances are in total chaos. But my Mom is safe and happy, if I can do this, I can do anything.

findingmyvoice - I'm so happy for you that this huge, stressy project is over! $2000 is A LOT, but now you have brain space for other problems in your life. It's quite possible that you would have spent more by dragging it out, in ways that are harder to quantify, like your own loss of productivity, storage units, or whatever. You're so right that the peace of mind is priceless.

Congrats, findingmyvoice! The cost of the junk removal was a good investment in saving your sanity in this crisis situation. Your mother is in a safe place, that's most important.
