I am in processing of renting a one bedroom house with fenced yard, full basement in South St. Louis that will allow my dogs. It rents for $525 month. I am waiting for their background checking to approve me. I was told I would pay my deposit on Friday assuming everything goes well. I just gave him my name, address SSN and my landlord and his telephone number. The house is great. He will change his plan of refinishing the hardwood floors (which are crap) and give me new carpeting. I asked for carpeting instead of hardwood floors. They are also tiling in the kitchen. I do not know if it is lynoleum tiles or ceramic tiles. I didn't ask. The best thing is they will allow me to take down a door and add a door with doggie door in it for my dogs to have access to the yard. I plan to lock the two gates with padlocks so nobody can let my dogs loose. It has a full basement that he said he could not garauntee was dry but that it was dry. It was bonus because I thought house was on slab. I will get move in date friday after deposit is taken. I am happy to say it is big enough inside that I did not feel cramped when walking in it and it has big closets in both rooms aside from kitchen which has nice pantry next to the door to basement and near outside entrance door in there. I am excited.

Btt--this is such wonderful news!
Are you sure you want carpeting with the dogs? SO much harder to keep clean and odor-free--not to mention the chewing factor! But then, I've always been partial to hardwood floors--mine are in very bad shape, I've never been able to refinish them--but I still prefer them to carpeting. Great that the landlord is willing to do the carpeting though!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out and you'll soon ready to go--then comes the work of packing. Good thing you got rid of some stuff at your recent garage sale!

Hi, btt! Congratulations on finding a place! I'm in St. Louis as well (moving soon, but will not be very far & my family is still going to be here, so I'll be back a lot). If there is anything I can do to help you, please just let me know.

yes shep gets to come along...but if he chews the new carpet I am taking him to be destroyed or giving him to the humaine society as an abandoned doggie...*** dog....I cannot really be sure he will not chew carpet but I hate hardwood floors....so I will give him a chance....he must obey!!! since clutterific is in ST. L you should know there are others around here too...They will have to tell you themself...but if I can mention it to them I will....hugs btt oh and they are female...me I am hopefully full male manly man... though I still cry at movies and such....hehehehe

Okay, I've really tried to keep my mouth shut here. But I just can't stand it.
Anyone who can speak so casually of taking an animal to be destroyed because he chews the carpet because he is bored ought not to have the animal.
You have several times mentioned looking for a new home for Shep. Maybe now is the time.

Oh BTT this is great! I have to confess one of the favorite parts of this thread was when BlackSwan said, "Suit up and show up, isn't that what they tell us?!" I loved it! I have to say that typically if someone can approach me and say, "Hey I really want to follow through and do xyz as we agreed I would, however I need to take care of my health on that day. Can we do it a different day?" As long as it's not a constant recurring issue, I'm usually really happy to work with entrepreneurs who can be that direct with me. BTT, please don't take this the wrong way, I think I agree with Moggy. I don't think you are a bad person of course, and I think ultimately as people we have to prioritize ourselves and that means knowing our limits. If we are over-extended we can't be of use to our pets (or anyone else in the world!) and it's not a good way to live either for them or for us. I think now is a great time to find a place for Shep, and in some parts of the country, a loving owner trying to adopt out a dog that they know they don't have enough time for can find some amazing people who do have the time. There was a point with Abby where we really needed to her to get her potty training under control, and I had reached a point where I would have sent her on her way. But then my job changed, I got to work from home, and it became a situation where I can let her out at will. Now we work more walks in, sometimes even short ones, and so she has learned to come to me to go out or use the potty pad. But it took extra time that I simply couldn't have given to this dog before I became a distance employee. The other thing I realized in this process: I am not a good candidate for a puppy. Probably ever. I can probably only care for one dog at a time, realistically, and it needs to be an older dog who has gotten things like teething out of the way. Anyway, I love how this thread started with so much fear and worry, and you kept perservering, and have found a place that will work! That makes me very happy. I hope you can cut back some on work. Since we are both going through a move--yes I did the same thing, started asking my friends in AA if they knew anyone who did professional moving. Found two guys who have professional moving experience, and I'm paying them roughly $20-30 per hour. I am renting a u-haul--because my new place is on a hill I have to get the small 17', although usually I like the 28'. They are each bringing one guy with them, and those guys get $10 p/hr. I think I mentioned that I'm going from 1500sq ft to 1100 sq ft. I am fortunate to have someplace to store some things right on site. The single biggest headache of all this has been paying people to haul away all the year's worth of junk in the yard and garage. I've spent at least $500 so far, even with things being recycled, craigslisted, etc. There is still at least another $100 worth of demolition/hauling to do. The cleaning I will do myself, and have my daughter help. Honestly I don't expect to receive my deposit back, so I will be making a good showing on the cleaning, doing what is ethical. But knowing that I am not likely to get the deposit no matter how good it is...while it makes me sad it also makes me look at some things and think, "Yup, and after 7 years here, that's what we call wear & tear". There has to be some sort of happy medium, because I'm leaving a $300 dishwasher behind, put in a $150 gas line in the kitchen, among other things. The garage has been infested with ants ever since we moved in, and 2 days ago I destroyed 2 of the biggest nests. Anyway, just meant to offer encouragement and suport, not to ramble on!

You have several times mentioned looking for a new home for Shep. Maybe now is the time. I agree with moggyfan. This is very disturbing to hear from you, BTT! I would never put down an animal that I've welcomed into my home because they chewed up carpeting or are incontinent. I don't think a dog would chew up carpeting because he is "bored." It's more likely due to anxiety due to his/her environment. (stress, separation anxiety, dirty carpet that provides too many enticing odors, vitamin deficiency, etc.) BTT - if you can't handle Shep, please find a loving home for him. As a true dog lover, I would never give up on one that I've brought into my home. When I bring them home, it's a promise for life to give them the best quality of life, no matter what behaviorial or house-breaking problems they have. When I bring them home, it's a "forever home." Your callousness about Shep/not-so-perfect-pets bothers me. Little_Ninja
