Thank you for this timely reminder, Lioness! I am preparing for a move and am prepared to discard alot of things. I am blogging about it in that section. It is hard, but can be done. In my first efforts and victories in desqualoring my home, I discarded things that I still think about. But part of my home is out of squalor because of tossing it, and my new home won't be weighed down with things I cannot use. I threw out many worn/stained ("perfectly good" : kitchen towels and such just this evening. I will refer back to this thread when it gets hard to toss. AMNESTY-It's a good gift!!

I agree that sometimes you just have to take action--- I worked at a thrift store and we had to do a lot of dumping as folks somehow think it is ok to dispose of broken dirty old things there believing that the thrift store will or can sell anything-
Most stores cannot so if it arrives already damaged and dirt is damage-- it is disposed off and costs the stores money to do this= where we live the thrift store is not exempt from paying garbage fees-
Letting go of stuff to garbage is good for you too as you can move on and as one of the gals said here you may be able to get to a point where you can recycle etcl
remember dirty is damaged and is therefore garbage already-

I am glad that this thread was bumped. It has arrived at a great time when I have become bogged down with the idea that someone can use my "treasures". I needed the reminder that I will never get this done if I am trying to spend time sorting where everything has to go. In the past more got tossed out when I just threw it all away. So thank you for bumping Lioness' words of wisdom.

Thank you O Lioness for this bit of sanity that you have bestowed on all of us. I am a tree hugger and a friend of creatures great and small and friend of our planet. People; take this amnesty and run with it. You have to help yourself before you can save anyone else!

I can deal with discarding "perfectly good" stuff. DH can't. Sometimes I can sneak out small stuff, but that's it. He has a tv in our room from the 1980s!! He will not let me pitch it. Or donate it.

Tossing everything I cannot use is giving jobs to our great great grandchildren.... Trash dumps are the gold mines of the future! Sometimes I will put a note and a token in a bottle or mason jar - Hello from Wendy, 2011.

I love the concept of amnesty. It helps to know that it is okay to get stuff out of the house however I can. That's great for the stuff I choose to get rid of.
I am also going to give myself amnesty to make the wrong choice about items. That is, if I choose to get rid of something and then realize later that I really do need it or use it, that's okay. I'm allowed to make mistakes. It's perfectionism to expect that I will be able to make the perfect decision (keep or toss) about every thing in my house.

Lion, Thank you so much for the post and the great links! I'm new and haven't quite figured out the filing system here, but I'm copying your post and saving it, because half the crap in my house is only here because of the words Yard Sale! Also, I'm fighting myself to not get all of the half full, expipred condiment bottles and jars that I finally threw out last night out of the trash can to wash them out and put them in recycling. Your wonderful post is giving me strength and permission to discard!!!

I'm throwing away . . . Drum roll, please . . . Empty steel dog food cans. It is paining me to do it, but I realize the absurdity of washing, soaking, drying and bagging up these cans, when my home is a health hazard - and the nearest recycler is over 60 miles away, and I have 1 can a day.

dayeanu, I was saving metal cans and those big plastic coffee cans too until last year! Woot for us!!! The plastic cans went to the Veteran's hospital hobby shop, and the cans to the dump for future generations to put to use.
I have a coal furnace so decided to burn all non-work-related magazines (no peeking!) and 95% of the old baskets and boxes - they all make great kindling! This way my trash bag output is cut down by about 60%.

Lioness, thanks for your referencing this thread! I read it all, again this morning.
I laughed when I got to my previous post about throwing away steel dog food cans. Guess what - I had forgotten I even threw them away! Guess I coped!
I needed to read this again this morning.

I did it on my last move! I got rid of almost everything that I own, and I felt guilty while doing it, but it is such a huge relief to be nearly possession free! Now I rent a furnished room, and all I own is a bookshelf my father made, guitars and keyboards, one or two hundred books, about one hundred pieces of clothing each for myself and my son and about twenty of his toys. And cellphone, and laptop. That is a long way from owning enough things and furniture to fill a two bedroom house to the brim. The change happened slowly, over the course of three moves in two years. You dont have to go to my extreme though (but you might decide you want to!) Every bit of useless, life depleting junk you get rid of makes breathing easier, one piece at a time. I needed to read THIS, this morning. I once again really like the idea of ditching everything that I haven't looked at in over a year.

I am glad that you bumped this. Right now I need to read it everyday also, so that I will be able to get the stuff out that I need to get rid of. I am under a time crunch and reading this helps put the items in perspective.
