I'm purging clothes and books again. Both are difficult for me. I added some more new clothes and shoes to my donate bags. (I don't count them on my ticker until I actually deliver items to thrift store.) I can only do so much purging at one time. I feel mental and slight physical pain when I add never worn, new clothes to the donate bags.

With the school year beginning again for so many people, I'll bet that those brand-new clothes will be a blessing to lots of folks, hiding!

...One of the things that I really enjoy about traveling and staying in hotels, in addition to the clean, uncluttered room, is that I can easily iron to my heart's content. Again, isn't that nuts? This is not nuts at all. : ) I completely understand. I, too, like staying in hotels because I have a manageable amount of stuff. Clean. Uncluttered. Quiet. It's lovely.

...You also might tell yourself that you "can" go clothes shopping--you just have to do it at your own home! ... instead of going on-line to buy something new, go to your "stash," pick something out, and get it ready to be worn. I'm doing that more and more often--going to what I already have purchased--when I get the "urge" to go thrift store shopping... I love this idea! Thank you!

Thank you for recommending "Debtor's Anonymous (Lion turned me / us on to that), and Co-Dependent's Anonymous* (more on this later). But really, ANY 12-step meeting addresses the exact same root issue -- addiction." Thanks, Lion and Freedom, for recommending Debtor's Anonymous. I was just on the Debtors Anonymous site << debtorsanonymous.org/index.htm >> I was hoping to find a meeting relatively nearby, but there are none. Does anyone know of and/or have experience with online or phone DA meetings? Thanks, again!

There's a coat online that I want to buy. Do I need it? Not really. I just want it very badly and it is half price right now. I read all these books about marketing so I know what the retailers are doing. And I too often fall for it anyway. I an ashamed of myself. The sale will be off in about an hour so I am trying to hold out. Could the money I would spend be more effectively spent somewhere else? Yes, of course.
The thing is that I had so very little income for so many. many years where I rarely if ever could purchase clothes. I don't make a lot of money now, but I do make enough so that I can buy clothes without neglecting bills, savings, etc. I can reasonably justify buying clothes sometime, when I need them. I do work full time and I do have to go to meetings where I have to dress up a little. But buying a piece only because I want it has to stop! I'm better than I was but it is still an issue.
I am asking for support in resisting this current I WANT IT.

Hello hiding I'm in support of you saying no to the coat if you need to. But if you don't end up resisting...all is not lost. You can get rid of a coat that you already have and replace it with the new one. Some times purchases bring forth a windfall of donations.

Hello Hiding. As the owner of two magnificent vintage overcoats (both bought at half price), I suggest you consider at least two outfits, plus shoes, you can wear with the coat you have in mind. If this will be a good buy for you, do it. And if it means you must purge some not quite right garments, all the better. I love my overcoats. One is 1960s and makes me feel like Agent 99 in Get Smart. The other is 1970s and has a wonderful Edwardian sillouette that looks just right with all clothes post 1990. I'm a happy chappie and I always look and feel chic in winter. Hiding, this is the time to make a sound and rational decision that will improve your wardrobe and make you feel bullet-proof. Can you successfully add this coat and purge less flattering items? If so, do it. If not, let it go.
