Return everything you got. Get a costume or make one quickly. You can always donate costume afterwards. Get excess baggage out. Can machine be fixed quickly? If not trash. Yes, ma'am ...I am going to return the needles, thread, and bobbins. I'll exchange them for fusible webbing and I'll just iron the fabric together. HA! I will give myself an hour to clean it a bit later. If it isn't fixed by then I'll see if someone can use it off craigslist.....

I love the velvet or flocked hangars. I get big packs at Marshall, s. Works out to be fifty cents a hangar or less. These are sturdier hangars and hold a shirt or pants or both. I also get the plain shirt ones at the dollar store and they are two for $1 there.
As I have purged and continue to purge my closet. .... the nice hangars are a nice treat and they do work in keeping my clothes off the floor.
I also have one of those sort absorbent mats under my dish drainer. It is wonderful and expand s the dish drying area. Love it. I just toss it in the washer and dryer every week!

Need some suggestions...yesterday I acquired fabric, sewing machine needles, bobbins, and thread in the hopes of whipping up a super simple costume for the little DS. I have not used this machine in years...and it immediately jammed when I started winding the bobbin. Now the hand wheel won't work either. I don't know what to do. Paralyzed really. I looked in the manual which was singularly unhelpful and I feel like I am wasting time trying to get the machine to work. This raises several evil mean questions: Should I get rid of the machine? Put the effort into cleaning it now with the uncertainty of being able to fix the problem? Store it for a better time? Should I take that time to hand sew little DS costume or should I just buy one and bring in more clutter? What do I do with the newly acquired sewing items? Return them? Store them? urgh! If the machine hasn't been used for several years, it probably needs to be cleaned and oiled. But it could also be something very minor and easily corrected. If you know the name and model of the machine, you can Google something like "Singer 123 (whatever your machine is) jammed winding bobbin" and probably come up with the answer. I've done this with a remarkably high degree of success when I've had problems with my sewing machine that weren't adequately addressed in the owner's manual.

I fix my own machines.. and I love vintage sewing machines. I also have a computerized one or two, and a serger. Well, I have a lot of machines, I went nutty a bit an started collecting them. So I can probably help, though I am going to say that right now, unless you can unjam it fast, and are an excellent fast sewer, put it aside and take the suggestion of Lostchild. Buy a costume, or go to a thrift shop and put one together. Our Goodwills have tons of manufactured costumes too.. though that may be that one of the largest costume providers in the world, is a few suburbs over. They save all the costumes all year round, the homemade sew ones, the new ones, and they put out old formals, wedding dresses, and all the Halloween and fall goods that came in all year!
I will be glad to help you fix the machine if you need it later. Halloween is 4 days away, maybe sooner if the party is for school or before the 31st. Not the time to start a new project.. and many Halloween patterns, are involved.
I edited this, as I did one of my long posts.. and since I seldom come to Acquisitions. I do not shop, I have a lot, and I have always had my finances under control. SO take others advice and take back the fabric and notions and see if you can get your money back. IF you do not make it, it might not fit a growing child for next year..

desireelafleur I agree with lostchild. Take back anything you can return to the store. How old is DS? My experience with 5-6 years old and under is that it takes very little to actually create a costume for them. MUCH can be used from their own closet. I would gently suggest NOT buying a single use item like a costume for both money and clutter reasons. But that is my own bias. As for the machine, you haven't used it in years. You will likely not use it again for years. Donate it. Period. Done. Do not attempt to fix. Do not PAY to fix. If and when you have the time and space in your day to day life and in your home to pursue a sewing hobby, you will get a sewing machine that works. You have other, more important, projects to do right now than fix a sewing machine. I am being stern and I mean no disrespect to the kind folks here who have given you suggestions on fixing the machine, but from what I've seen of your posts, going down the rabbit hole of trying to fix a machine that YOU HAVE PROVEN THAT YOU WILL NOT USE is not a good use of your precious, limited time.

IF you do not make it, it might not fit a growing child for next year.. Sorry I didn't acknowledge this post sooner. I got distracted cleaning. Thank you for your offer of help. I did try to clean it but it was in vain. I didn't let myself work more than an hour on it. I KNOW that the right person with the right skill set can get this up and running again. Unfortunately that person is not me. I can take some pride at least that I can use a sewing machine if I need to, but the reality is that I am more of knitter (which comes with it's own clutter problems! ) The funny thing is I wasn't going to do anything fancy. Just a super hero cape which was I think four pieces and straight lines...oh the humanity!

I agree. As I said above at least I know I can use a sewing machine. Sometimes it is hard to get past all the "buts". I even had this wacky idea of keeping the cape as a keep sake. (Although if I really think about it what would I do with it except keep it in a box?) Somewhere there is a "sunk costs" thread and I truly think that is what is hindering me. I cannot return the fabric I bought and now I am sunk monetarily in that regard...I will bring the other stuff back though and discreetly donate the sewing machine. (It was a gift from my husband. And I went crazy with it when it was new...then it entered the clutter as stuff is want to do. Then I lost the power cord, had to order a new one, and now I am donating it...such a waste! But I guess that feeling wasting holds a lot of us back, huh?)

desireelafleur I don't think it was a waste. It was a tool that you used quite a bit in the beginning and then your interest in the activity expired. That's all! A perfectly natural and normal occurrence. I'm sorry you can't return the fabric. Is there a good reason to keep it? Curtains? Another neighbor that DOES use a sewing machine? You did good with your intentions.

It's black fabric. I am fairly adept at small upholstery projects. I might be able to use on a small footstool or something. Thanks for the encouragement.

Bought some green tea. I never had this one before, so I will see how it tastes. It has a lot of interesting flavourings.

And lunch.

Those black & white herringbone patterned tights I got at Target the other day turned out to be a bad buy. They snagged if you even looked at them, and thus the pattern got all skewed after only one wearing! I have a pair of kneesocks in the same B&W herringbone, and they've lasted for years, but made by a different company. So I'm not buying any tights from Target anymore. Phooey.
Now, at first I just put them back in my socks drawer. For the next couple of days, every time I opened the drawer and saw them, I got pissed off all over again. So today I threw them clean away instead of my usual old behavior of keeping them forever just in case. In case of what? If I needed to wear stupid snaggy tights again??
