So much going on, my head is spinning....
bree those customer service calls are so frustrating. Good for you for sticking with it! I hope school gets better for your DD; and eases your heavy heart. I looked up my house and it was built in 1979. Yeah, it doesn't seem all that long ago but now it is considered vintage. Probably doesn't help that I have always been happy with the way it is so never updated anything. I checked wooden doors ~ expensive and requires a fair amount of maintenance. So good to hear that your animal kingdom is staying healthy and on the mend for poor boy cat. I hope your family stuff calms down too.
phoenixcat thanks for your suggestion about the metal plate for the door handle. I'm pretty sure that is the plan for now. He put some kind of foam inside the door that is hardening and then he will work the door handle and dead bolt with that. ohblondie I did not find anything at Habitat for Humanity but it was an excellent place.
Today the furnace guy came who was supposed to be here last week and was a no show. He's the guy I really like. He was telling me all the issues with the new computer system, the new office changes, the company taking over so many smaller ones and how communications are so terrible. Of course, he told me different things than the other guys who have looked at the furnaces and AC's. I was able to point things out to him and he explained why things were done a certain way. With some blame tossed on the oil tank company.
He was supposed to be here from 12 - 4; he called at 10 a.m. to see if he could come then. That worked, now I have the rest of the day free. His solution for the vibrations in the equipment is to cut a hole in something and run another pipe someplace else to get more fresh air flow into the furnace. AND I would have to leave the door open all the time to the furnace room.
I can't take a chance on the cats getting in there, climbing the built-in shelves and getting into the unfinished ceiling. That's happened before and it was a nightmare trying to get one of my sweet kitties back out of the ceiling. I'm so tired of let's try this, let's try that. In everything. I asked what would happen if I did nothing about the vibrations, would anything fall off. He said no but it would cause more stress on the motor of that unit and wear it out faster. The office is supposed to call me next week to schedule a time for this guy and another fellow to come out and brainstorm things. Pretty sure I will let them come out, tell me what they think and then say I will think about that.
All this stuff makes me much more inclined to get things in shape around here and move. I'm going to another open house this evening.

Oh, okay def, it sounded like you had compost pickup, some communities do, although it seems like a really messy job, I always wonder how they do that. Do they give you a sealed container to pick it up in, then wash it and keep cycling them back to people? I would think that was labor intensive (and expensive).
Danny, don't you wish you could sit down both the furnace guys you had together and make them each defend their opinions in front of each other? It's so hard to know who to believe and what to do.
I got another short call from my shopping friend, she sounded good again, she said they attached some kind of gadget to one of her walker handles that is a sort of cradle for her forearm with a post for her hand to hold onto--her hands are numb and weak and she says this really helps her walk--but they can't find one for the other handle...her helper handyman guy is coming back from out of town in a few days and is going to help her get a second one. She said even with this thing on only one side of the walker she was able to walk twice as many steps as her prior efforts. She also said her appetite is better, so all in all a good phone call.
Next I will finish the plant room cleaning.

good morning everypony!
Selling our house was good for me, danny15 . There is still maintenance at DVD's, but the house is much smaller and ultimately not my responsibility. My folks are also relieved to have that behind them.
I got to the sale way early. There was another woman in line but she wanted other things. Fortunately for us both we are talkative in the AM. (Type 1 trait.) So that helped pass the time.
There were two other people who came for dolls, so I shared with them. Better for me in terms of space and cost! And it was fun making them happy. I brought home three: Zombie Snow White, Zombie Bell, and Zombie Little Mermaid.
Got birthday pies, water and more groceries. Did a return to M's. Got an ingredient for a craft project.
Also got some more gifts for DVD. I need to wrap next because that project is spread out all over the standing table.
ON DECK: prep corn prep shish ka bobs put away more stuff set up tables and table cloths set table make patties what to drink? Sun tea? make garlic favors? prep for house cleaners in the AM
get Ma's # and call him re: carpooling

Diane, you were asking def6, but I thought I'd tell you how it's done here. We do have municipal composting here. We have large wheelie bins into which we put both yard waste (small branches, grass and garden clippings, etc.) and food waste (leftovers, moldy stuff, peelings, seeds, coffee grounds, bones, and fat). Bones and fat are okay because it's an industrial process and additional heat is applied. We are not discarding actual compost but the makings of it. Sometimes our bins do get a little smelly, but then usually it's just a matter of hosing them out and letting them dry. The contents are collected weekly, mechanically lifted and dumped into the trucks, just as the trash and recycling are. The compost that is made is available for sale in the spring. My landlord puts his kitchen waste straight into the bin; I use specially designated and approved green compostable bags to contain my food waste so it doesn't smell up my kitchen. Then I toss those into the wheelie bin before trash collection day.

Where we used to live - it was similar - food waste and yard waste went into the large green bin for weekly pick-up. Twice a year you could get two bags of compost with proof of address. This was included with our sanitation bill.
Now, I pay a weekly service to pick up 5 gallon containers. I have 2 but usually just need 1. The clean ones are lined with paper (paper bags normally) and include a pack of sawdust to help with the odor. I do leave it in the garage and just have a small countertop one that is moved to the "big" one once it is filled. They take all food waste and cardboard/paper food tainted containers such as pizza boxes, Chinese food take out, paper towels, etc. This same service has a farm so I could have a CSA box if I wanted or a "one off" if it was something I really liked. They too provide compost as long as you pick it up at one of their farmer's market locations.
When we moved it was very hard for me to throw away all the compost so I'm so glad I found this option.

Hello reve!
Thanks you guys, for the composting information! It was for curiosity reasons only, I have my own compost container on my back porch. That is fascinating that you put yard waste and compost into the same bin--earlier in the summer when I had some zucchini that grew to giant size hidden under the leaves I ended up putting them in the yard waste bin because I figured--they're plants, right? So that made sense. And this is funny, when I first read that the compost stuff goes into the yard waste wheelie bin I thought--isn't there a concern about rodents with all that food waste? It took me a second to realize that--if people don't compost, the food waste goes into the garbage can, which is probably the same kind of wheelie bin! Duh.
I got my hand truck! It's so small, and LIGHT plastic--that when I took it out of the box I thought--this can hold 220 pounds? But I put a 40# bag of bird seed on it and rolled it back to the kitchen pulling the handle with one finger--the wheels rolled so beautifully it felt like the cart was empty! And when it folds up it will just tuck away in a corner--I love it--this was a wise purchase!
I'll be going downstairs soon to start getting ready for bed--good night everyone, see you in the morning!
Diane

Latte had vet visit this morning and had blood and urine work done to check on his current kidney status. And was given Abx and ointment and a Ringworm cx to diagnose a lesion. Upsetting visit for me. Around suppertime, Mocha climbed up next to me on the sofa. Rubbed on my arm with a lot of purring. and bit me hard. Usually it was just a light bite with no broken skin. This one was hard and it bled a lot. I was on the phone tonight with Walgreen's and got cut off after waiting 2.5 hours. Called the other number and got cut off after an hour. Can't find out about tetanus shot. Will probably need Abx too as it was in arm on side with lymph nodes removed when I had Mastectomy.
I should not have pets.

catcats I'm so sorry about the bite. I hope you can get that seen to early tomorrow. And that you get a less-bad answer to Latte's troubles. Best wishes figuring out whether pets are a good idea for you. Have you been thinking this for a while, or is this the result of an especially bad day? You're a good, caring cat mom.

Thank you, goldenthreads. I wouldn't get rid of my babies. It was a horrid day. Just way too much, all at once. I got cut off after 2.5 hours on phone with Walgreen's and after calling their other number, after one hour, I was cut off again. Then I called Medicare and a nice man could not find anything, but then said Medicare wouldn't have covered it unless it were for an injury. He suggested I call my prescription insurance and they had covered it at CVS, last October. Then I looked up CDC info. It is just one shot and a booster every 10 years. I really thought it had been Walgreen's. I will set an alarm and call Dr.'s office tomorrow morning. I will need to be careful around Mocha though. He wasn't angry; he was being way too affectionate, and he got excited and bit. So I will have to stop him when he gets super lovey like that. Latte shows me affection, but he never does that biting thing. I had a wonderful cat almost 60 years ago, our very first Siamese, Patrick , who bit lightly when he was showing affection. Most cats don't do that. catcats

Good morning scholar! Ugh, feels like 105--I hate to tell you the temperature here right now--it is 54! It feels so heavenly to be chilly.
Catcats, I'm so sorry about the stressful pet day, maybe Mocha felt your stress and bit harder than usual. I've known several cats that would bite when getting lots of attention, we called them overstimulation cats and as you said, tried to read when they were getting a little too animated and stopped petting before they got to the biting stage. I hope you can easily get antibiotics today.
I have another issue with the Chewy pharmacy--I'm just shocked at how bad they are compared with the supply part of the business. My "auto shipment" of the dog's medicine came up and I checked the box that said "please contact my vet for refill authorization". A few days ago I looked at it and it said "in the process of getting authorization from your vet." Today I still hadn't heard anything so looked again, and it said "order cancelled." I looked back at my emails and even checked my phone messages to see if they had contacted me--no. So I sent an email asking what's going on and they said "we didn't get any response from your vet so we cancelled it". I said "did you send me a communication about this that I missed?" knowing they didn't. This morning I got any message saying "oh yes, we send an email when an order is cancelled, check your spam folder." Which I had already done. So I sent an annoyed message back. Now I have to call the vet and of course, by this time I'm getting low on the medication, so unless I can find another pharmacy option quickly I'll have to buy some from them at 3 times the cost and walk there to pick it up.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to have them examine her anyway, maybe there's a medication that would work better for her arthritis. I know that at some point she's just getting older so there's nothing else to be done, but I'm not sure I'm at that point yet.
She hasn't gone out yet since she had to go at 1am. This time it took me almost 3 hours before I could fall back to sleep.
I think this morning I need to at least go out in the front and cut the lawn edges and pull some weeds that are out there, if I can't get myself to cut the grass yet.

I did go outside to do some trimming, I was out there about an hour. At first the sun wasn't out, it was wonderfully cool, and no mosquitoes! Toward the end the sun came out and my arms started itching--couldn't tell if it was the old bites itching or the mosquitoes had enough warmth to start working. My back was hurting anyway so I came inside. In the front I trimmed some extra long areas of grass that were sticking up above the rest, the evergreen bush, and some of the huge patch of woody nightshade that is growing alongside the front porch. I actually think it looks really pretty, but it's encroaching onto the neighbor's lawn. The problem is the grass under it is long, so then it looked like he didn't cut the edge of his lawn, so I trimmed it with my weed whacker. I also pulled some weeds, and then tied up and trimmed the huge Mexican sunflower plant growing just outside the back yard fence, and a lambs quarters that is there too, they were hanging onto the sidewalk at the side of the house.
I also trimmed some long grass in the back part of the yard, I haven't done anything with the grass back there since the mosquitoes hit in mid-summer. Oh, there is another small pumpkin growing back there!
And finally, I did some seed collection. The birds are really decimating the seeds, which is part of why I'm growing the plants, that's good. But I don't want to be buying seed next spring when I have so many plants already producing it--I have to catch the seed once it dries up but before the birds get it, which isn't easy.
I need to make a plan for the rest of the day so I don't waste it. I will wait to call the vet until later this afternoon, I don't want them to say they'll come and get her for an exam today, I'm not ready. I'll call later and ask if they want to see her next week, and if not, to please call my prescription in somewhere. I know of another couple of veterinary compounding pharmacies, I'll have to check their policies and prices.

Hi Everyone ! I called the Primary early and I had to go in. She prescribed Clindamycin and a probiotic, But I am NOT SUPPOSED TO TAKE THEM unless it gets sore and red. She doesn't want to give me Abx unless I need them---I agree---but since it is Friday and she won't be in then until Monday, she wants me to be able to start Abx without going to the ER. While there , I told her that the new BP regime was not working and she told me what to do. I don't agree, but have to go along with it. The drugstore will deliver those meds later though. Diane, I hope you can get your doggo the meds before she runs out. You are so good to her. Diane, yes---overstimulation --that's it. He seems to be more high strung about grooming too, but this was definitely from being too affectionate. Why do even cats sometimes have mental problems ?? I am worn out. catcats P.S/ danny15---I am sorry that everything is so hard on you right now. WHY can't repairs, etc. be simple fix-its ? That plate benind the doorknob does sound doable.
